SleepingTitan
at the very least, it's an improvement and it gives us some leeway...I don't think it happens in this draft, but we can look at adding a 1st round DE within the next few years if there's someone of value we really like instead of forcing one There are better pure pass rushers coming out the next few years than this year, it's weak this year overall Even if Morgan has a breakout season next year and Wimbley plays well, I'd still look at adding DE We should have the mentality to look at DE every year imo If the right guy is there, its ok to take him, even if you don't have an immediate need That's been the Giants philosophy during ELi's Era...that line one them a SB
Alcibiades
Exactly. SleepingTitan, you are already wrong. Morgan could have played in week one, but the coaches didn't think they would need him. And they shouldn't have, but we lost to a bad team. It wasn't really the defense's fault. The offense was pretty bad. Morgan has had one health issue. ONE. Could he get hurt again? Of course. But let's not pretend he has a history of injury already or something. Justafan
With Klug and Casey and hopefully another good DT to worry about plus Wimbley on the opposite side Morgan could have a nice year. I think if he struggles this year you have to move in another direction but there is no reason to not be optimistic about him at this point.
cenj
Potential -- that is what Wimbley still offers, even as a vet. The biggest thing with Wimbley is that he's never played as a pure 4-3 DE pass rusher in the NFL -- which is exactly what he did his senior year at FSU when he was unstoppable. People are excited because there is this little optimistic voice in the back of everyone's mind saying, "did we just find a more athletic KVB/Babin?" He's an elite physical talent that has proven pass-rush skills, some of the best in the NFL -- he just hasn't been used in that role fulltime. We need an elite edge rushing threat. We very well may have gotten a top prospect in his prime without paying an insane contract or giving up draft picks. Lots to like about the pickup. VanCityTitan
I'm Pretty sure KW played as 43 DE his rookie season when he posted 11 sacks on the year. Either way I'm definitely excited we brought him in!

cenj
He may have been miscast as a 3-4 OLB It's what happened to Babin What's funny and never mentioned around here is that we screwed the Texans that year in the draft (2004). Reese somehow convinced them that we were targeting Babin, so they traded up right in front of us to get him. We traded down and got Troupe in the 2nd, then went for Laboy and Odom -- neither of which ever worked out. Odom finally turned the switch, but he was just too brittle. Our third round pick, DT Randy Starks, we foolishly gave up on too quickly. He's become a great player in Miami (3-4 D). Of course, a 7th rounder in that same year was our current whipping boy, Amano. That was a shockingly bad draft, coupled with bad decisions in retaining/cutting guys in the years following. In retrospect, we probably should have kept quiet and drafted Babin with our 1st.
OILERMAN
AT FSU he lined up in the wide nine at RDE and went after the QB

At the time it seemed like we got a hell of a deal trading that pick, it's just too bad that most of the guys we got didn't pan out. Drafting Babin definitely would have been interesting after having lost Kearse to Philly, who eventually ended up with Babin as well.
