2013 Seahawks - Defensive Additions are a Long Play

Jrob gutted the defense this offseason. He let players go that underperformed to their potential on offense. He went all in on defense and ST + Julio/Reynolds. We're obviously tempering our expectations for the defense. A lot of talk about DVOA and SB contenders has been thrown around, but I wanted to put it all together to show what the potential is. This defensive overhaul is a long play.

In 2010, Seattle was just an average team. Fun fact, it was at this moment that they dumped their dirty laundry (Rus Webster) on the Titans. They went 7-9, won a playoff game. The best part of the year? They drafted Okung, Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor.

In 2011, Seattle improved in the draft with KJ Wright, Richard Sherman, and Byron Maxwell.

In 2012, they got their QB and Wagner. All of a sudden, their front 4 was getting pressure without a blitz because the investments in the secondary were paying off. They finished 11-5.

In 2013, the gloves came off and they steamrolled the Broncos 43-8 in the SB.

*It took 3 years for those investments to pay off starting in 2010. Legion of Boom became a household name, and everyone wanted their games flexed to Primetime.

The Titans are in a similar position, but we got our QB first. We expect a top 5 performance from our offense this year because we've been great the previous 2 years (and honestly we're better than we were last year sans Jonnu and Davis.) On defense we have these new notable additions (past two years):

Caleb Farley (hopefully contribute by end of season)

Elijah Molden (hopefully be a starter week 1 NB)

Fulton (hopefully be a starter week 1 CB)

Jenkins (shooting for the Hall)

Rice (hopefully getting meaningful snaps early)

Tart (probable starter week 1)

Autry (disruptive starter)

Murch (look for him in packages)

Weaver (edge setter hoping to get meaningful snaps by midseason)

Dupree (hopefully starter week 1, more realistically wk 6 to return to form)

We expect vets to step up: Byard, Simmons, Hooker, Evans, Brown, Landry.

While it's certainly possible for this team to make SB run this year considering 17 games, we're the 2012 Seahawks, not the 2013 SB winners. Realistically, it's gonna be next year boys, but stranger things have happened. We only need a couple knees to bend the wrong way on the Chiefs and Bucs to become a strong favorite. The schedule is rough. I expect us to lose a lot early, but win 5/6 of our last games, winning the division again.

The Seahawks defense of that era was 7th in scoring D in 2011 and were #1 for 3 straight years, then #3 and #2......But Thomas, Sherman, Wagner are HOF'ers and Chancellor would be if not for the shortened career.  Add the very good complimentary pieces.

It's a big stretch to say the Titans have even one HOF caliber player let alone 3 or 4.

Not to mention Seattle didn't legit contend for SB's until Wilson, who also will be a HOF QB.

I mentioned that in the post. I feel like we got our QB earlier than they did in this hypothetical comparison. I don't know if anybody on our defense rises to that caliber, but the potential is there, at least with Simmons and Byard.

Byard's best chance at going to Canton is buying a ticket.....Even Simmons has yet to be a Pro Bowler.

The potential is there for the Titans defense to be good.  What Seattle put together in the early 2010's was All-Time great.  They dominated the statistically best offense of all time.

Aside from Jones and seemingly Henry, there's not a HOF player on the Titans

Ah, but the team is yet young.

But I do like how you just admitted the Titans have 2 HoF players on the team rn.

Well Henry's not a lock yet and Jones has done all of his HOF work in Atlanta.  It's not nearly the revealing statement you want it to be.

Your OP comparing the Titans defense, with 0 HOF caliber players, to one that was dominant for 5 years or so with 3 or 4 HOF caliber players is what's bizarre.

I apologize for the optimism. They're all trash and will never amount to anything as long as they live in TN

Hope, if, shooting for.  This D isn't one that says SB.  imo, 2019 and 2020 were our SB years.  Those teams were loaded with the promising players who were going to seal the deal.  The 2020 Titans were the best team we had on paper.  Shit happened.  JRob went 0-3 on his key additions. Last year, we had players going into the last of their rookie deals.  Also, MM just didn't develop.  This team went to the playoffs 2017, 2019 and 2020.  MM's 3rd, 5th and 6th years on the team built for him.  JRob did a wonderful job bringing in Tannehill to preserve the Mariota run.

Last year the team was snake bit.  I love the enthusiasm, but the 2021 team has too many gotta do good players we don't know about and lacks depth.
