Thoughts on offense vs Steelers

I dunno, he's always excelled as a system QB.  Of course he panics, outside of the play is not his strength.

I trust him but something is missing in his awareness between the whistles.

I'm hoping he gets marginally better as he gets more comfortable, something he has not been allowed to do with all of the changes he has endured. I see what you see though. Some people just have that in their game. Marcus has not shown that trait so far.

It did look as though the Steelers may have gameplanned a bit more than we did for a preseason game. I could see the blitzes causing some issues, but even one on one the OL was manhandled from start to finish. That's my main concern because we've seen what happens when our QB faces pressure. That has to be cleaned up.

As far as the offense, I think coaches may sometimes call plays to challenge the players just to see how they handle it in preseason. I'm not too concerned about Marcus yet. He's done enough good to make me believe in him. Holla at me in week 3 if he continues to stink it up...

It's a new offense with new coaches.

This is why Vrabel, LaFleur and Pees were more indicated to bring a more solid performance to see. Even for 2 offensive drives..even if those drives ended with a FG kick.

That's the substance that has been missed. That's why the new staff, with the players are more..should be more significantly commited to show solid things. Since they are new.

Now players' level, preseason or not looks far away from being what it should be at. Tennessee has more to do by shaking their ghosts away, than keeping them. Being their THIRD preseason game, was about time to bring it, to show it and to give a closer glimpse on where they are at...if they really are at a better place. So far they show they aren't where they are supposed to be.

Mariota keeps treating things like a rookie, on the field. WR's look confused. the offensive scheme lacks of solidness. Yes..during the preseason. And that's a fact. The team looks far from bringing, starting, having a solid season.

It’s preseason. That’s all that needs to be said. If he struggles in regular season then people will point to how it’s been obvious. If he doesn’t then he’s gotten better.

The truth is it’s preason... glorified dress rehearsal. Uniforms looked good, headsets worked... that’s about it.

We’ll know more after game one. Until then ...

He sucked in real games last year, this isn't some preseason blip. This is basic QB play that he is totally botching. This isn't agenda driven, it's in plain site.

Way to throw in he might not be the answer

The strange part is how he never did this under Whiz, or even when Mularkey took over for the rest of that year. His rookie year he stood in the pocket and delivered strikes while taking punishment. I’ve said for a while now the coaching of Robiskie and Mularkey with the mandate from ownership to protect him at all costs is biting us in the ass. They literally told him to bail and run instead of manipulating the pocket. If he doesn’t get over it he’s next to useless long term.

This isn't true. He had 19 TDs and 10 INTs as a rookie, he had 11 TDs and 1 INT in 3 games. He had something like half his games with a passer rating in the 60s or less. His rookie year was fine, even promising but the idea he didn't have any of the problems he has now is completely untrue. They were acceptable as a young player, as a 4th year player they are alarming.

For the Titans to have a productive offense I believe they'll have to use Mariota's running, screen passes and playaction. The idea he needs to be in some spread quick passing attack is an absolute pipe dream. His passing skills are way too eratic for that. He needs to be managed. Can he develop into that? Maybe. I'm not ready to say he can't develop into a quality pocket passer but the idea is getting dimmer and time is ticking.

I have to wonder if the coaches are seeing what we are on tape and talking to him explicitly about not bailing from the pocket once the regular season begins. He’s done it five times that I’ve counted in a very limited number of snaps.

100 percent. It’s his biggest flaw.

Obviously not something easily correctable

And of course they see it

I didn’t say he didn’t have problems as a rookie. I said he stood y’all in the pocket making multiple reads and took the punishment, which is wholly different now. That comes from the mandate.

Remember the Cleveland game his rookie year where he manipulated the pocket for a solid 6 seconds only to come back across to Beckham? We haven’t seen that the last two years. We’ve seen the opposite. That’s on coaching until it isn’t.
