CreepingDeath
There's a whole article about these complaints over at The Ringer: https://www.theringer.com/nfl/2018/3/29/17174936/targeting-rule-change-history-ruining-football-roger-goodell Opening paragraph: Quote “Nowadays the whole idea is to avoid contact,” Paul Zimmerman wrote about the rules fundamentally changing the sport of football. In Zimmerman’s book The New Thinking Man’s Guide to Pro Football, Fred Dryer of the Rams said the league “wants a circus” on the field and that defenders, specifically pass rushers, “have become the scapegoats in the dilution of the great American game.” Dryer retired 37 years ago. Zimmerman’s book was published in 1984. Five years earlier, Tom Landry complained that you simply “couldn’t play defense” against top wide receivers because the rules had been watered down so much. I don't see why this is so difficult. They had their chance to do that and blew it by lying about the CTE studies. It would have been a political shitstorm to make them sign waivers after that came out.

Here is the thing though. Dan Snyder has not given in to the political pressure regarding the Redskins name or their logo. Yet the Redskins franchise has not lost a lot of support over it. So at the end of the day is the NFL retaining true fans or are they retaining fly by fans that aren't actually going to contribute to the bottom line? People have not stopped watching the NFL because of Ray Rice. People have not stopped watching football because of CTE. People will however stop watching football if they take the unique aspects of the sport away. The whole reason the Pro Bowl lost support is because people started half assing the game to prevent injury.

The bottom line is from advertising. The millions that don't "care" about the sport relative to your interest in it garner much more attention (as it should). If you can say X millions of people tune into a football game, that's literally the only thing they care about. 15 hours ago, GoaTTitanMcNair9 said: People have not stopped watching the NFL because of Ray Rice. No, hardcore fans will not stop watching, buying apparal and buying tickets and PSLs because they take away kickoffs. Casual fans won't either. The NFL has done A LOT to be in better limelight in reference to domestic violence and CTE. They may not have made any real changes in terms of outcome but they have done more than enough to convince the masses they are attempting to resolve the issues and put it on the back burner for a few years in terms of outcry. That's all that needs to be done to combat issues, make it look like they are attempting change.
