I thought the SIL was the one that was 60+? And if you think the Good SIL would be ok with taking Power of Attourney that would be the first step I would take. That way the bad SIL doesn't have free access to the $ anymore.

Correct. Bad SIL is 60. Good one is a year or two older.

I'd guess your MIL knows what is going on and is enabling your SIL. If that's the case there is likely nothing you can do.

Yeah this is the sad thing.

But one thing we can do is say no one (good SIL or us) is helping her financially as long as the situation continues.

Mother in law is being taken advantage of financially by multiple family members.  Mostly idiot sister in law who lives with her (SIL is 60+ BTW - yes, that's right, and she is living with her mother and has been for several years).  Idiot SIL is a hot mess, has been divorced for about 12 years (from a rich doctor), and since that time has essentially been less than useless.  She clearly has deep seated emotional/mental issues such that it is clear that she is incapable of living alone.  She finally got a job a year ago after being without one forever (essentially since before she got married some 25+ years ago).  She was too good to work jobs she felt were beneath her until she finally got desparate enough.  She doesn't make jack shit but it's a start.

Her excuse for invading her mom's space is to "take care of mother" because it's "what daddy would have wanted."  Well she has done nothing but make MIL life a passive-aggressive emotional hell, and the lie was put to that this summer when MIL fell and hurt herself badly and the SIL did basically jack shit to help pick up the slack.

MIL is a handful and overbearing, but she and I get along great.  She is a proud woman who worked her ass off her entire life, as did her husband, and they were a mostly middle class if not lower middle class family.  Deceased husband (my FIL) was a war hero - fought on the front lines in Germany as a grunt private.  she lives essentially on social security and her VA benefit, and has (or had???) some savings.

We have been suspecting for a while that my SIL and maybe others were driving her into the ground, and taking advantage financially.  Now we have the proof.  My wife set up her online banking account and we have gone through and basically because of multiple revolving credit account, some credit union based where her grandsons live (sons of her deceased son) and basically my SIL clearly doing almost nothing to carry her weight while crashing at her house, MIL has barely been above water for at least the last year and a half, probably more.  Tons of bounced checks and overdrats, late fees on her house, the whole 9 yards.  You name it.  It is very very sad.  And this for a woman who prided herself that through hard work and determination and living within her means had managed to set up a fairly comfortable retirement for herself so long as she stuck to her budget.  Well idiot SIL and idiot grandkids have fucked that to high hell.

The question is what to do now.  This is a strong-willed, independent woman.  this is a farm girl from South Carolina who raised three kids while very young and while her husband was fighting in the war.  Makes me absolutely sick someone could treat a widow in this way.

She needs to sell her house before she loses it, but mostly to take away SIL security blanket.  Other things need to happen too.

I guess I just needed to vent more than anything but any advice anyone has I am all ears.  And like I said full on shtick is anticipated.

God...this is so easy.

Step 1: Become power of attorney for MIL. Step 2: Sell MIL's house and any possessions of value (while giving SIL Mapquest directions to the nearest homeless shelter.) Step 3: Move MIL into personal house. Step 4: Pimp that bitch from the house. Step 5: When she becomes useless (like all women at some point) film a real-life snuff film with her in the starring role. Step 5: Sell snuff film on the Dark Web . Step 6: Profit.

You're welcome.....

Giving your MIL money is essentially giving the deadbeat SIL money

In all seriousness I don't think anything criminal has happened. She has been exploited and taken advantage of but I have no evidence of an illegal activity.

And there is no evidence of incompetence or dementia either.

She is doing all of this willingly as far as the law is concerned.

Then it's her choice and the life she wants, ill-effect and all. If she's mentally competent, you can advise, counsel and even cajole... but it's her choice. So advise, counsel and cajole.

True. There isn't enough Viagra in the world for me to get it up for my 82 year old MIL. She a GGILF

Well, it sounds like 52O is your guy then.

But I'd wait 'till his ol' lady runs off with a rich doctor and he gets desperate.

Georgia's a long way to travel in an ancient Buick.

Yeah like I said I have a handle on the legal issues at play it's more of a family issue.

Certainly I am staying behind the scenes and helping wife and aunt work through every thing.

I sort of feel like I would be getting ahead of myself to talk to a lawyer when no one has asked me to do so.

I hate to say it but you're probably playing it correctly. Provide advice, watch for legal issues and keep your distance. Family is hard and tricky. As much as you may want to be a hero- getting pulled in without being asked usually results in no win scenarios and doing the wrong thing for the right reason.

Usually with family and in laws in particular, I look for clear ways to help but try to stay out of the drama and politics.

I am very close to my in-laws and I finally learned this after years of stupidly trying to be the hero.

What changed everything for me was something I read:  Family drama requires three people - a bad guy, a victim and a hero. So if you fulfill any of those roles you are contributing.

Come to think of it I may have read that on this site.

All joking aside when in the rare occasion I have reached out to this board or others have good advice always bubbles up. People that just come here to troll prob don't realize it but there is a wealth of diversity of walks of life and wisdom on this board if you are willing to look for it.

How old is the MIL?

I just realized I misread this post.  Here are the respective ages of everyone:

MIL - 82/83

Idiot SIL - 60+

Stable, professional, emotionally detached SIL - 60+ (older than bad SIL by a year - and still a total hammer, BTW - she was beauty queen of her hometown in SC back in the day and still has it going on)

Wife - 43

Yeah I thought that the MIL had to be in her 80's so she is starting to get up there...  Like others on the board have said, I think you should continue to provide advice at a distance and keep one eye open to look for any illegal activity on the evil SIL part. If your MIL is willing and you can get the Good witch to take Power of Attourney I would go that route. Family Drama is one thing that's hard to step in the middle of because you almost always end up offending one of the parties involved and things end up backfiring in your own face.
