Thoughts on Mariota

Marcus played smart, efficient football today and looked comfortable in doing so.  He took care of the ball, didn't try to do too much, and made plays with his legs when needed.   He saved his best work of the day for the red zone: four RZ opportunities...four touchdowns.

He didn't look dominant, nor did he throw for 300 yards...but that wasn't what the gameplan called for.   He did exactly what he needed to do within the context of the game, committed no major mistakes, and did nothing to put the team in a difficult situation.   A very solid and productive effort, and easily the most consistent performance he's had this year.

Even with today's win, Mariota still looks lost.  Yeah, the offensive plays try to cover for him, and they let him run, using Demarco as a decoy, but he still has problems with his passing.

He doesn't know where the pocket is and runs backwards instead.  Yeah, one of those backpedaling plays was a TD pass, but still, at times he looked like a lost rookie out there.

What good is it to have him go out there in an offense that is protecting his weakness of not being a good pocket passer?  How will that help him improve?

Do we still have to forego wins and just let him practice out there, even in regular season games?  He has a long way to go.

- Still calling plays with 2 WRs and 8 blockers.

- Still doing asinine things with Murray and Henry. (see: Tom Gower's twitter for details; cliffs: 13/7 M/H 1H, 14/0 2H).

- Still have awful pass catching options with the only real threat downfield being Walker behind a LB or slot CB and in front of a safety. (That was exploited today.)

The team may have won today - and put up 30 points - but the offense is still bad. And it's bad in part because the coaching is still inadequate.

Why is the Murray Henry carry ratio an issue?

He's had a problem this year with having happy feet at perceived pressure. That has greatly affected his mechanics. He looked less like he was worried about the pressure. Maybe he's mentally more focused on not being worried about the pressure.

IDK, If Mariota were throwing for 3 TDs and 250 yards in the first half do we just stop going with the guy with the hot hand? Murray was running all over the place. Keep giving him the ball.

In the first half Murray had 13 carries to Henry's 7. Then to close out the game they featured Murray which seems more than fine to me.

With all the talk about Murray it's easy to overlook how good Henry looked in this game
