Tim
Weird how opposite him and Mett are. Mett throws a nice deep ball but struggles mightily moving the chains with intermediate and short passes.
Mythos27
It's a spot passer. Throwing to people, instead of to where people are headed. Pop pass/pick & stick syndrome. We're gonna disagree on this one. I've seen him make the right throw on vertical routes and look proficient. Do I think he's better than Mett with the deep ball? No. But I do think he's adequate and has many other tools at his disposal to get the job done. He's in year one. It was unfair when people labeled Mett a bum year one and pretended that he was somehow a finished product as a rookie. I'm not gonna do it to MM. We have no idea where these guys will be in 5 years. luvyablue256
He doesn't step into his throws. He didn't do this at Oregon. We knew this, but we have to live with it.
Mythos27
Guys don't just forget how to throw the deep ball. He did it well at Oregon. I could provide examples but I'll leave it to guys like Cyrus. This isn't some fatal flaw. It's an area he needs to work on but he has the tools to fix it. It was a bad loss but we gotta chill. If the kid had Chad Pennington arm, I'd be concerned but that isn't the case here.

Mythos27
Nor am I. But, I'll tell you where he won't be in five years, he won't be spraying passes proficiently all over the field better than a full field proven pocket passer like Mett. Who knows which way it will turn out. I'm tired of trying to predict the future, I just wanna enjoy the ride.
Mythos27
actually this is exactly what he did at Oregon. He had guys running wide open up the seams and nonchalantly lobbed the ball to them. It did happen at times but this wasn't always the case. I saw him throw some beauties down field. When I watched him on tape. There is room for improvement for sure but I just don't see this as something he can't become proficient at and because of that I'm not overly concerned. I must say though, until he gets it down we're going to struggle a bit since DCs are already having their DBs just sit on the short shit.I believe you can see evidence of this on the missed deep ball to Kendall, Gilmore sat on that hitch like he knew it was coming and got burned because of it. Gilmore is good but no one is good enough to consistently break on underneath routes like he did if they also have to respect the deep ball.
earlers
This thread is very appropriate. I've been waiting for him to throw it downfield for three straight games and have barely seen enough attempts. This is why I was sorta ticked at him for throwing the int at the end. You haven't thrown it down field hardly all game and now you want to do it at the most critical point in the game when it is not your strongest asset. big2033
Honestly, I still have no idea either way with this. Could anyone ever throw deep to Kendall Wright? That's never really happened since he's been in the league. Is Mariota not pulling the trigger or is the offense geared toward a two starters who should be playing slot receiver and two TEs. I just don't have a sample size. I'd like to see him throw to players who are actually deep threats. Dorial Green Beckham needs to play and be that deep threat. Justin Hunter hasn't made a deep play since he's been in the league either. Taking shots are just not a big part of our offense. Nate Washington was our deep threat. I agree with your overall point concerning sample size, it just isn't there yet. Kendall gets open deeper than people think though, a lot of DBs get turned around by his agility in close quarters. The difference is that with practice and development, it would be much easier for the long passer to develop the short game. big2033
This just in: Marcus Mariota was 1-of-7 with an interception passing 10+ yards downfield Sunday. Since going 5-of-5 on such passes in his debut, Mariota has completed 41.9% attempts thrown 10+ yards downfield. Well, like we noticed he def struggled with it today. But I feel like gameplan was part of it. There was a lot of dinking today.
Tim
The difference is that with practice and development, it would be much easier for the long passer to develop the short game. The other way around would be harder, I see it the other way. The NFL junk yard is littered with QB's who can throw deep, have strong arms, but can't hit the intermediate passes on a consistent basis. Accuracy to hit those passes consistently can't be taught.
