ATLANTA (AP) — Former President Jimmy Carter revealed that recent liver surgery found cancer has spread in his body but gave few details about his prognosis in a brief statement released Wednesday.

"Recent liver surgery revealed that I have cancer that now is in other parts of my body," Carter said in the statement released by the Carter Center. "I will be rearranging my schedule as necessary so I can undergo treatment by physicians at Emory Healthcare."

That's rough at 90. History will hold his presidency in higher regard than the last couple decades.

Repubs have turned him into the poster boy of Democratic ineptitude while continuing to canonize Ronald Reagan. Sad, I wish him the best. He is a good man.

With good reason.   Carter was a terrible president with terrible results, while Reagan was a great president with great results.   The only good thing Carter did was strongly promote Habitat for Humanity.

actually, Carter was a good president with terrible results and Reagan was a bad president with good results. The events they presided through were not all directly of their making...

LOL!   You are very much in the minority in that leftist line of thinking.  Reagan was a very good president, and you saying otherwise makes you look like a little crying baby.

The right wing kills me.....they turned Jimmy Carter (Navy nuclear submarine officer) into a pussy and Reagan into a combination of General Patton and James Madison. Reagan was an actor portraying a president...simple as that.

This is getting ridiculous, I'm sorry. The double standards around here are nuts. No, Jimmy Carter wasn't the disastrous president that some view him to be. Is it fair that the Republicans use him as the poster boy & as proof that liberal policies don't work? Of course not. But why can't we just acknowledge that without ripping his immensely more successful predecessor?

Here's the deal, EVERY President is looked on more fondly when they're about to die. Every single one. Why? Because of the benefits of hindsight people realize how goddamn difficult the choices these guys had to make were. The unfathomable pressure they were constantly under becomes more crystallized. But make no mistake, Carter wasn't close to Reagan. There's a reason RR is a luminary & a giant, and it isn't just because his base loved him.

There's a lot more to being a President than being a policy wonk. You need to lead & inspire people. There's a reason why the country was so "gray", for lack of a better term, under Carter. Carter is a very smart, even brilliant, kind & decent man. He's also refreshingly honest in his views. He wasn't looked at fairly, but we don't need to rip a great leader to right that wrong.

@Starkiller is 100% correct

Reagan is a failure solely because of his expanding the War on Drugs, his wife's ridiculous "Just Say No" campaign and opening The Office of National Drug Control Policy.

Nothing has militarized our police force and crippled our inner cities quite as fast as the war on drugs.

Like I said, history will treat Carter kindly despite the Right's smear campaign in favor of their patron saint of conservatism Ronald Reagan.

That was a failure of RR's, no doubt. But he at least had the 80's crack epidemic as an excuse, there was a huge call for something to be done. What was Bill Clinton's excuse for his Draconian drug laws? The prison population nearly doubled under his term, and it wasn't because they busted the real criminals, the "kingpins" at the top of the ladder. He loaded up prisons with lowest level dealers & users, and also put a huge focus on marijuana, which was a real disaster.

Trust me, I agree wholeheartedly that the War on Drugs was an epic failure & more than that I think it was a moral black eye on this country. Property seizure spits in the face of the Bill of Rights & frankly it scares me, it's downright creepy. But the right aren't the only owners of this albatross.

You are correct, Clinton took The Office of National Drug Control Policy and made it cabinet level. Clinton took the snowball that Reagan and Bush started rolling down the hill and did little to slow it down. The mass incarnation of nonviolent drug offenders definitely increased.

I wasn't taking a shot a only the right on that issue. The Dems have done little to stop it and that absolutely goes for Obama also.
