Also while the state is in a budget crisis and public education is struggling, Alabama continues to funnel outrageous amounts of money to state universities in Tuscaloosa and Auburn. UA has over a billion dollars in new building projects on campus lined up while they suck up tax dollars and continue to increase tuition rates to levels that are simply not realistic to most in-state families. Nobody will dare say anything about that though, just close state parks and government offices. UA and AU are sacred cows in this state. Untouchable. They will even let blacks go to school at one of these universities if they are really good at football or basketball.

Alabamian here. This is unintended consequences. This state is blood red to begin with and there is little threat of the governor or the state House going blue. Alabama will certainly never be blue in a national election. They are continuing to do so after these offices close. The real issue is the budget here. We have high state income taxes and sales tax yet they are constantly out of money. When Obamacare expanded medicaid the state of Alabama chose not to do so and turned down all of the federal money. Now the program is going broke again. More dangerous than making it difficult for people in rural areas to get an ID is the policing in this state. Blacks are overwhelmingly targeted at higer rates by law enforcement agencies for drug crimes usually involving marijuana. Possession 1 is a felony, no voting for them. The state is a dumpster fire of right wing religious nutjobs and racists. The governor is an adulterous asshole who's wife served him papers a month ago. The people in rural areas were actually more upset about the closing of ABC stores. The state of Alabama is in the liquor business and they are usually found in poor neighborhoods. They destroy poor neighborhoods with alcohol and lock them up for smoking weed. While they are having these massive budget shortfalls they are also shutting down other sources of income. They spend millions fighting casinos in the courts every year. They will not allow a lotto and refuse to let the people vote on issues like gambling, marijuana and voter ID laws. Forbidding citizens vote to on issues is actually in the state constitution. Alabama is a conservative, Republican wonderland. If you ever needed an example of why right wing policies don't work and destroy lives look no further than the bright red state of Alabama.

The states in the south will continue to vacuum up federal money and have budget shortfalls instead of legalizing marijuana. They'd rather keep throwing millions away pursuing and incarcerating people. Just embarrassing. Alabama just increased the cigarette taxes to generate revenue but marijuana is off the table, okay lol.
