OILERMAN
http://www.federaltimes.com/story/government/management/agency/2015/07/15/postal-service/71062368/ In 2010 the Postal Service laid out a series of reforms it said were needed to cut billions of dollars from its operating costs and help the agency survive and thrive in a more digital future. The biggest pitch: Ending Saturday delivery for letters, which the Postal Service had estimated would save about $3 billion annually. But years later an improving financial landscape and a Congress continually deadlocked over Postal Service reform has led to a slow and quiet death for what was once seen as the linchpin of a revitalized Postal Service. "While the topic of five-day delivery was a large part of the legislative ask in the last Congress, we are currently looking to gain consensus and we have not been promoting five day as a key tenet," said Postal Service spokeswoman Sue Brennan. Looks like the overtime will continue to flow like milk and honey! Overall revenue grew by $223 million – or about 1.3 percent over the same period in fiscal 2014. Operating expenses fell by $160 million, contributing to the overall increase in income. So far this fiscal year the Postal Service has seen $1.4 billion in controllable income. Stranger
I recently realized my perceptions of the USPS was based solely on my current mailman. I order a lot on Amazon, and most of the time it's delivered USPS. And usually that means it gets to me faster than if shipped UPS. USPS delivers to me around the same time everyday, and UPS is god knows when, and sometimes as late as 8PM. However, my current mailman went on vacation for about 2 weeks recently, and his replacement was a complete shithead. I was getting other peoples mail, and a package I was expecting ended up lost for a week and a half until he came back from his vacation. His replacement had put it in the wrong box. Since they lowered the starting pay they drag anyone off the streets and just send them right out there I think I've figured out that being a fucking mailman is my dream job. They've kinda screwed it up if you're just starting but when you factor the pay, benefits and retirement I shit on a lot of these college grads out there barely scratching out a living and paying a shit ton in student loan debt. Then the added bonus of seeing all kinds of crazy on a daily basis out there on the streets
Stranger
Since they lowered the starting pay they drag anyone off the streets and just send them right out there I'd believe it. Dude looked like he was maybe a few years removed from high school. The regular mailman told me he was still sorting out that kids mess.
TitanedUpSince'70
Most of the public thinks anyone can deliver the mail. Nothing to it right? All ya gotta do is go in there and pick it up in bags and deliver it. lol Well, that's not the way it is at all. A lot of people might try to do it, but not that many can succeed and do it like it should be done. You first get there in the morning, and the shit is in tubs on the floor, unsorted. You carry the tubs to your case, which is usually a 3 sided case, 6 rows high on each side. It can hold as many as 700 slots, or more if it has an extension wing put on the side of it. Each slot has the names of the people residing at that address that the mail is going to be delivered to that day. After you sort the tub mail out, then you have the loose raw mail to put in the case. And also what they call the machine run DPS mail. That shit is in order most of the time so all you do is case it, or take it to the street with you if you are bold enough. Then, you have all the damn packages to sort out before you leave and try to get those in order. After you get all that shit done, before you can leave, you still have to PULL ALL THE DAMN MAIL FROM THE CASE DOWN INTO YOUR TRAYS and then load the trays AND all the fucking packages into your truck! You're say to yourself, "Ok, can I go home now?" No! The fun is actually just starting, because now you have to finally go out and deliver the shit! It usually takes 3-5 hours to case the mail and sort packages, pull down the mail from the case and then load your truck, depending on how heavy the mail is. And if it's a day after a holiday, it will take even more time before you get out of there as the mail and packages are backed up. Then to deliver it, it might take another 3-4 hours, or more, depending on the above again. I saw plenty of shitheads in my day there, and if they get to overwhelmed with all that damn mail, then they become one of the ones you see on TV and read about on the Internet, that throw away mail because they can't keep up. And it doesn't surprise me that they can't get rid of Saturday delivery, because most of the time the P.O. can't control the flow of mail worth a shit anyway, so the days after a 2 or 3 day holiday are like a nightmare! So after the P.O. is closed on Sat and Sun, every Monday would be like delivering after a holiday almost. Fuck that! The substitute carriers can barely keep up as it is, much less trying to go in there and sub for the regular carriers on a Monday. Because if Sat. delivery is stopped, a lot of regs will want to call in sick on Mondays, as there would be so much mail... every... single...Monday! Once again, fuck that! OMAN, can you tell I'm still having Vietnam like flashbacks bro!? LOL Make it stop man, just make it stop!!! But you can't, because the mail never stops!!! TitanedUpSince'70
My grandfather was a USPS mail carrier for 25 years. He loved it and retired with them. When I finally made it as a regular carrier after being a sub for 5 years, I actually used to like it most of the time. Especially Summer time mail, as it was almost always light in volume during the Summer, and you could actually work a 4 or 5 hour day some times and then go home. But the other parts of the year were hell a lot of times because I had a huge route and worked in a high volume mail zone. It all depends on your location and the size of your route. Some routes are gravy and you can work them until you're 90 years old because they are small and get very little mail etc. Then, some routes in high mail flow zones are so overloaded you can barely keep up. OILERMAN
My grandfather was a USPS mail carrier for 25 years. He loved it and retired with them. When I'm 59.5 and retire I'll have 40 years in, including my 4 years military which count. I could actually retire at 57 but I want the full 40 years to max out my pension.
