If the Cavs win the NBA title this year, is LeBron the best ever?

Or he would be Magic, who thrived in that era without a jump shot and is considered one of the best to play the game. LeBron's 1000 times the passer and ball handler that Pippen was. Also Magic, like LeBron, wasn't hateful and aggressive ala Jordan or Kobe. He did just fine. Trying to project LeBron as somehow weaker in a different era isn't a good way to argue one way or another about what he can and can do.

If you play that game, where does it stop? The cream rises to the crop in any era. LeBron is a fine shooter, and could probably have developed a more substantial J then, but he doesn't need to be Ray Allen on the court, and the 90s wouldn't force him to become a chucker.

This whole idea of it being LeBron's personality, him not being able to play in a vicious league or something--it's all based on your own perceived dislike for the guy, not objective criticism.

It's based on his style of play being centered around the fact he gets free entrance to the paint anytime he wants. That would not happen in a different era. Without it I don't think he's close to the same player. I think he's a 20ppg 10 rebound, 6 assist kind of guy. Points and assists go down because he can't drive as easy and doesn't get the ball in the open court nearly as much. Just my opinion.

If they made him a PG then his points drop, but his assists go up and rebounds drop. This isn't based on my dislike. It's based on his lack of a jump shot and the fact most of his points come from his ability to drive the lane unhindered.

And let's say he was Magic like, then he's sitting at 20ppg, just like I said above. If he's a small forward type then he's 20 ppg with more rebounds and less assists. The argument was just made for me.

Why, because you can pull numbers out of your ass?

Yeah right. Those teams all hated each other. Now the NBA is akin to the May weather PAC fight. They're all rich as hell and good friends. Very few rivalries exist. I don't know what you're talking about my friend.

Pro sports has changed but you are crazy if you think they all hated each other back in the day. You do know that Jordan and Oakley were tight and partied together even when they played for heated rivals? I think you are romanticizing things a little too much here. Of course your frame of reference is NBA Classic so it shouldn't surprise anyone.

Meh, they have full games on the internet. I got into it about four, five years ago. I'm not saying they were all enemies, but there's no way you can believe the NBA plays with close to the intensity they used to in the 80s and 90s.

Playoff basketball is just as intense now. I loved Basketball growing up, it was my 2nd favorite sport behind football, and I played nearly everday. I watched the Rockets constantly in the late 80's and all through the 90's. Teams mail it in for large stretches of games during the regular season for sure but not the playoffs.

Lebron has shot 40% from 3 point range for an entire season before, which is just fucking unfair.

Jordan sucked from 3point range. The only time he shot a reasonable percentage outside of 1 year were those 3 years the line was shortened.

Lebron is a solid shooter. Jordan isn't even that discernibly better mid range shooter than James and certainly isn't better from deep.

The no zone/illegal defense rule trumps the hand checking emphasis by a wide, wide margin. Lebron would have most likely averaged MORE points and MORE assists due to those rules, than today especially when you couple that with the fact that the 90's teams were weak sauce, with talent spread out due to 6 expansion teams from 88-89 to 96.

With the illegal defense you couldn't double unless the guy had the ball. Lebron would absolutely pick apart teams with passing from the post the double came.

In reality we have two of the greatest athletes in the world separated by 20 years.  Jordan dominated the competition as well as it can be dominated and left the game the greatest of all time. We can nit pick all this crap all we want but Lebron has lost in two finals.  He is still well behind Jordan in championships.  Go ahead and parse who had a few rebounds more a year or something I'll still take the guy who was basically unstoppable for 6 years once he got to the playoffs (his only loss after 1990 was when he joined the team late in the eyar, wore 45 and wsa obviously not fully ready to play).  Now, if you are a much younger person you have no idea.  None.  All you are doing is looking at highlights.  Jordan had a determination like no other man in sports and would not be denied.  Period.

I agree, except I don't place a lot of weight on the fact LeBron lost in the finals twice.  It is a factor, but it's not the be-all end-all factor you want it to be.

The first season Jordan did not play after the three-peat, his team won 55 games and make a respectable playoff run without him.

If Jordan was as untouchable as you seem to believe, he would have led his team to another championship when he returned in 1995 instead of getting bounced from the playoffs.

Jordan went to the playoffs 13 times.  The 7 times he lost, he couldn't make it to the finals.

LeBron has lost 7 times in the playoffs.  5 times before the finals and 2 times in the finals.

I think if you look at just their playoff losses, LeBron has the edge.

The better argument for you Jordan nutswingers is to say Jordan has 6 rings in 13 tries.

3 finals, Sox. If GS wins this year all comparisons need to stop.
