They need to reach the playoffs first. LA is tied for 5th place right now with Dallas, and only one game ahead of Portland for 7th.

 

The Lakers could easily fall to 7th place and would have to go to the play-in tournament. The Spurs, Warriors, or Grizzlies could knock them out.
