The Super Bowl is won if that pick were reversed. I almost took a hatched to my nuts when that pick was announced. "From Utah, WR" is all I remember... I screamed for a full day about that shit...

15 years later and we're still paying the price for that one.

I wasn't singling those picks out as the worst, they weren't, they were just below average to average at best 2nd rounders. The problem was they both had to start along with Woolfolk at the same time when Rolle left. The secondary was so bad it was incredible, I'll never forget the KC game the week or two before XMas when Volek went nuts but the secondary was just giving up bomb after bomb

Agree to disagree on what? The fact that Reese's mismanagement of the cap caused the Titans to have to purge their roster of nearly every good player they had while other teams were simply reloading? He was a decent personnel guy who had some bad drafts at the end of his tenure. I still take him over Fisher with complete control any day of the week though.

What you seem to forget is that Jeff with Bud at his side sat down and told Reese that they wanted to hold the core of the team together as long as they could. You can blame Reese for not standing up to the high-on-his-horse newly minted Superbowl coach and the nutty owner, but it seems like he made the decision to go along with them to keep his job.

Actually I didn't forget that. Its not relevant. Read it again.

OK

Since I'm a nice guy I'll rehash it for you. REESE SUCKED AT MANAGING THE CAP AND USED THE EXCUSE OF HAVING TO KEEP THE NUCLEUS TOGETHER TO COVER HIS ASS.

Does anyone remember the rumor, and I doubt it was very serious, that we were talking with the Chargers in '05 about trading Volek & our 1st (the Pacman pick) for Rivers? It was absolutely mentioned, I'm pretty sure it got as far as ESPN the morning of.

We talked about about it here.

Brees was playing well and looking like he was developing into a good qb and it was no given he would be the one traded since Rivers was totally unproven. There was some speculation around here that Rivers was a better prospect than either Leinart or Young.

If Brees doesn;t hurt his shoulder I totally believe the Chargers would have traded Rivers for the 3rd overall pick. I don;t believe that we would have though. Bud wanted Young.

In any case Brees' shoulder injury made it all moot.

Brees days in San Diego were numbers the second the Chargers drafted Manning and then swapped him for Rivers. He was Never going to be traded in favor of Brees.

Yeah it sounds nuts now but at the time Rivers was no shoe in, he was considered a very accurate QB with an awkward delivery & below average athleticism & arm strength. Most people didn't have him close to Eli or Ben coming out the year before. He also started the last game of the year & looked awful.

Volek, on the other hand, absolutely looked like he could be a future starter for us & was unstoppable those few games at the end of the year. I'll admit it, I was sold on Billy the Kid, he was a coaches son with a big arm who threw the sweetest deep ball I've ever seen. Unfortunately he wound up being a douche of the highest order & his arm just didn't seem to have the same pop throwing the other routes as it did on the long ball.
