Barring a dramatic change in form, Portugal have little chance against Ghana... and to a degree that they should beat us on goal differential. Gonna have to fight for the tie at minimum, which is a tall task imo. I think that last 20 seconds lost them their spot.

We have the point differential on Ghana. We also have the second tie breaker in goals scored, as well as the third, which is heads up. The ways we don't make are if we lose by more than one goal and Ghana wins, or if we lose and Ghana wins by more than one, both of which aren't probable but are very possible.

We totally control our fate on every level. If we win or draw we're in. As long as we don't lose by more than 1 we put a lot of pressure on Ghana. Portugal looks bad at times, but I think their style actually fits pretty well with Ghana. I don't see any type of a blowout happening in that game, so as long as we can keep our game close I think we'll make it.

The US have a lot to be proud of. Without two mistakes, it's a 2-0 game. They never purely manufactured a goal. Without Bradley missing right in front of the goal it's a 3-0 game.

We can draw against Germany, but hopefully Portugal comes to play and puts it to rest with a 2-1 victory or 2-2 draw.

I don't know anything about soccer....and even I know how very wrong this statement is.

Best bet is for Portugal to beat Ghana by a small amount. We've got a 6 goal lead on them in the point differential. If Ghana beats Portugal then we can't lose by more than 1 goal and that's only if Ghana only beats them by 1. If they beat them by 2, we're toast w/ a loss.

But a win or tie vs Germany and we're in no matter what.

I know enough to know that Portugal has a very good chance to beat Ghana even if they don't play that well.

This makes me more knowledgeable than you. You can't trump pure intelligence Jamal.

lol. He's got a point.

False.

Three possibilities: He hasn't watched their games, he did watch their games and knows nothing about soccer or it's a false objection based on what I actually said.

Believing Portugal stand a good chance of winning without a change of form from one or both teams is akin to saying Spain still has a shot because they're ranked number one in the world. Ghana dramatically outplayed Portugal against both common opponents. Ghana should be 2-0. Portugal should be 0-2.

His point is just a bad, uneducated troll attempt.

No. You made a false and inaccurate assertion and I can, by sheer virtue of superior intelligence coupled with 43 years of arm's length anecdotal casual experience around soccer and the world cup, not only bridge the gap of interest that exists between us; but actually surpass your level of valuation and insight. Well, in this case anyway.

Let me crystallize it all for you:

Portugal not having a "dramatic reversal of form" in no way, shape, or "form" guarantees them "little chance" for victory against Ghana. Teams win games they don't deserve to win all the time in World Cup play. Portugal, playing as shitty as you claim, just tied the team that BEAT Ghana.

Jamal, I could go on, but I'm lazy and there's no point.

No, his point is accurate, actually. Soccer isn't like other sports, even though all sports have it to a varying degree where the best team doesn't always win. Soccer has it all the time. A team can dominate TOP and shots on goal and still come out in a draw or loss because of a single miscue, much like what happened to us last night.

As we saw last night, Portugal has a guy that only needs an arm length of space and 20 seconds to change an entire game. Just making a blanket statement such as "if they don't play better they stand little chance!" is overly simplifying the game. They could play the exact same and still draw, or even win, a fairly good percentage of the time because of talent and the nature of soccer.

Jamal's probably right on this one, though CTF.  Ghana are all about athleticism and the counter.   It plays right to Portugal's weakness. Ghana is okay in the heat. Portugal really wilted late.  Ghana only needs a point or two and a US loss against Germany (most would say very likely).. They have a lot stronger motivation.

Lastly, the "best player in the world"  has been Portugal's MO, and he's looked rather pedestrian.     Honestly, Portugal got the goal on that cross by CR7 had Beasley 1 v 1 and crossed it instead of taking him on 1 v 1- wtf?

Portual looks a lot weaker than the media and the rankings say. On the flip side, Ghana just tied Germany and gave the US all they could handle.  That game could very likely be a slaughter for Ghana.

US needs to handle their stuff against Germany.  Go for the win, hope for a solid draw. IF its tied by the 75 0r 80th minute- its going to be the most tense and boring game I've likely every experienced.

Except the US played horribly out of character against Ghana after getting up early and then played pretty much true to form against Portugal.
