Chris Johnson barred from facilities?

He'll get cut before the off season workouts begin imo and this will be a non factor.

As for the McNair case, what a bush league chicken shit move by the franchise to lock out a player like McNair from the facility. How do you ever let it get to that point?

It was a black eye for the organization, no doubt. McNair was an immensely popular player league wide, he was very well respected by his peers, and the media loved him as well. Even fans from other teams really respected him. It did not shine the best light on the team, that's for sure

What happened with Randall Godfrey? I remember the players were livid at Reese for cutting him. Was it that he waited until it was too late for him to catch on with another team?

Reese asked Godfrey to restructure and he agreed. He then got cut later in the year.

So if the team wants to de-activate a player or put him on the PUP list or.... whatever..... then the player can just do what they want? Refuse? Put themself in the game?

Titans are on the line for that contract. Shouldn't they have the right to make some decisions that affect their roster, their CAP and their liability?

Poor football players. They have a short shot to make a bunch of money that most of us will never get.

McNair or any player is not in charge.

I can get fired at any time, can't you?

You act like McNair was not getting paid. He was being  barred from the facility so he would not get hurt and damage the Titans' flexibility.

The team runs things not the players.....

The Titans had a tremendous amount of flexibility when it came to McNair's contract.  All they had to do was release him and the terms would be null and void.  A lot of employer/employee contracts don't offer that level of flexibility.  But instead they wanted to keep him under contract, while hedging the risk that the contract be reached in full by McNair.  That is completely on the Titans, as they were a willing party to the contract.

No they didn't which was the whole problem. Reese's idiotic move of putting a 50M bonus into the contract destroyed their flexibility. He was taken advantage of by Bus Cook but to be honest any decent agent would have done the same.

I remember the players were furious over Godfrey's treatment, which makes sense, I didn't know about the restructure. I always kind of supported Reese, I thought he had some good drafts & usually fared well in FA, but he really made some amateurish blunders ha?

There was actually more to the restructure.....

Randall Godfrey accepted a straight 2 mill pay cut out of his 4.5 mill scheduled base pay at the start of the league year to help the Titans get under the cap. When June 1 came Reese released Godfrey out right and got the other 2.5 mill in savings by waiting until June 1. The Titans were so tight against the cap they couldn't release Godfrey before June or the accelerated signing bonus wouldn't have given them any relief, it would have cost them money.

Reese tricked Godfrey and his agent into thinking that 2 mill pay cut was all he was going to do and Godfrey would play for 2.5 mill for his base. Godfrey and his agent did the Titans/Reese a big favor by agreeing to that cut because the Titans were desperate and Godfrey had all the leverage.

It's literally one of the scummiest dirty tricks I've seen done to an NFL player.

But you have to question Godfrey's agent. Back then it was pretty common for agents to force teams into language in that situation that guarantees the 2.5 mill base salary. I'd also argue that a good agent would have known the Titans cap situation inside and out and understood his 2.5 mill base would be in jeopardy come June 1st

Reese started out terribly as CTF has mentioned before but he did have a string of drafts that really helped the Titans contend. But when it came to keeping the team together you will not find a bigger idiot than Reese was. The contracts he gave out while the Titans were contenders was as incompetent as it gets.

As far as CJ getting locked out

After Bud embarrassed himself by locking McNair out of the facility the league actually changed the rules and made it where you can't keep a player under contract out of the facility.

Chris Johnson will not get locked out of the facility.

McNair was a beloved player at the time he was locked out. If CJ was locked out fans would cheer it almost unanimously

I'm not so sure the Godfrey thing was planned.

I always thought they asked him to restructure during the offseason because they wanted to keep him. And then once training camp rolled around they decided they didn't.

It was a dick move either way but to me it seemed like they made a mistake rather than master planning to screw him over.

He was cut right after June 1, not training camp

And it would have literally been impossible not to have planned it.

I'd lock him out anyway. The fine would be cheaper than his salary.
