Vols ranked #1 recuiting class by Rivals

Eh, it's still early, and I doubt they stay on top. Still, good to build momentum, and hopefully the Vols recruiting team can spin early rankings in a way that pushes toward a good overall class.

It is very early still.  If holds, will still be a stellar class regardless of ending ranking...which is just for fans.

But it does answer the question if Jones and Co. can recruit in the SEC.  The answer is "yes" and he is locking down the state pretty much in his first year.

This is a good sign. It was a concern for me.

Now if the new coach can be the anti-Dooley and motivate the guys to play. I wouldn't think it would be THAT difficult.

The rankings have changed since the post was made....

i know. i just laugh at all the UT fans who seem to say every other year or so that they have the #1 recruiting class in the nation... when in reality it means that for half a day they had the #1 recruiting class. I checked it on friday and they were #3.

by the 2014 year - when the class actually arrives - they could be out of the top 50.

Class rankings mean nothing except for the fans. What I am impressed with is jones has gone out at got the best players in the state. Something that was ignored by the previous staff. As far as stars go, you look at a player like jalen Hurd. Don't care what his "star rating" happens to be. You look at his film and you can see heis a big time player. You look at players other offers as well. This class is a very good class so far...on paper of course.

I think it, at least, reveals the recruiting staff is being aggressive and lock down the kinds of players you HAVE to get if you are the Vols and want to have any kind of success at all. Programs like Tennessee are built on locking in 3 and 4 star guys and developing them beyond five star talent. The top guys are all going to go to Florida, A & M, LSU and Bama. The Vols just need to make sure that the guys who are 5 star before they play a single college game get outworked on the field by guys who're less hyped.

Easier said than done, but it's the only model.

Who were some of the last 5 star guys Tennessee had? Bryce Brown? Da'Rick Rogers? Janzen Jackson?

A lot of good they did in TN.

I'm having a hard time thinking of five stars recruits that actually played well for the Vols. Eric Berry. Robert Meacham. Who else?

Horseface left in 98.

What was he, class of 94? Anything that happened pre-2000 certainly doesn't point much to the state of recruitment now. What I wouldn't give, though, to go back in time and convince Jughead to take his talents to South Bend so we wouldn't have had this past era of obnoxious Peyton Manning worshipers. These people are worse than Tebow fans.
