Press Conference - Feb 7

Titans fielded inquiries from other teams about the Hobbit's availability (Loggains) after the season.

Interviewed 4-5 guys before hiring Ragone. Thought he was the best option.

Henshaw brought in, in part, because of Titans struggles with underneath routes for TEs and RBs.

Loggains, when asked about tailoring offense to Jake and CJ, pretty much just replied that Jake is face of franchise moving forward. Said he wouldn't just scrap offense from last year, but improve it.

... aaaaand the midday180 cut away from the presser. Boo.

Defense in now:

Munch and Gray talked scheme, philosophy, why bad in red zone, why good with sacks... etc. After meeting, Munch wasn't sold on keeping things. Considered blowing things up, told Gray they'd get back together. Didn't want to take a step back. Looked at available and difference makers available, decided the best step forward was to improve what "we" had. "I need to do a better job too," said Munch. Talked with Gray about how to improve staff.

Munch has known Williams for 20 years. When thinking about how to improve things, Williams was obvious choice. Has personal, first-hand experience seeing Williams work. Munch personally reached out to Goodell about Williams, got permission to contact Williams, contacted Williams, then talked to Ruston about it. Munch, Williams, Ruston met for a day and they felt comfortable... then spoke with Gray who was open to it. Then went to Bud about reasons, etc.

Munch wants the two to "co-exist." Similar to Dave McGinnis when he was here.

Williams knows he has to change how things were done in the past. They will do things the right way.

Williams talking now (Munch said not going to discuss past):

Met with Commish last week. Thanks everyone and thier mother for opportunity. Appologize, take full responsibility. Took year to refocus life on positive things. Is here to work tirelessly on behalf of Titans.

You learn about yourself under difficult circumstances. Learn about family and friends, too.

Asked about Fujita's comments on trust, he said he hasn't read it. Trust will come from how he treats players and how he helps answer their main questions: Can you help me get better? Can you help me play another year? Can you help me earn more money?

Asked who has final say on defense: Gregg mentioned how important working with Gray and Munch is... especially Gray. Says he always has an ongoing ranking of position coaches "carried in his briefcase every day" and Gray was at the top. Gray says their familiarity renders power struggle irrelevant. Decisions are made together.

Why didn't work out in St. Louis: He hasn't discussed it with anyone there, so he doesn't know. "It's my first day back"... not allowed to talk to anyone before now.

... aaaaaand midday180 is over so they cut away again.

Final note - Gray to call plays as coordinator, per Munch.

(I'll keep updating for a bit)

Yea, coach, I hope we don't end up 33rd in league defense either.

Most interesting to me was Loggains shutting down any discussion of run versus pass by labelling Jake the face of the franchise... and Munch taking so much initiative to go out and get Williams. This hiring is all his doing and he was gung-ho about it. Munch owns this one, whether you like it or not.

I was really referring to points allowed where the Titans were last. Regardless, how the hell do you take a step back from where the Titans defense finished?

ROTFL!! Do you think being on the field six more minutes per game than the Titans offense hurt the defense?

He probably meant he didn't want to start over with a new DC and possibly have a brand new scheme as a "step back"

Yeah, he said something along the lines of "Nobody wants to hear 'we fired everyone and are starting over'..."

I'm sure they'll post the video on Titansonline within a few hours and everyone can watch it themselves if they want.
