Isn't Kendall Wright supposed to be a deep threat?

Look, I think we've scored big with Kendall Wright. He's shifty and has solid hands (I say this despite his three drops on Sunday). He comes across as a "playmaker," as we say in the big leagues.

But if I recall, part of the reason the Titans drafted Wright was to "stretch the field," etc. And by golly, if you watch his highlights at Baylor, the dude is pretty apt at catching bombs.

Nonetheless, he's averaging 8.2 yards per catch, and it seems most of his catches are short slants. There's nothing wrong with this, per se, I'm just surprised how we've used him ....

Any thoughts?

His main attributes are his quickness and body control. He's got a very good first step but he doesn't have great top end speed, never has. He's able to get deep but the routes he runs depends heavily on how defenses play us.

It's not like we're just not asking him to go deep.

you sure about that? seems like he's playing the hawkins role from last year and he never went deep. maybe the position they stick to most has a shorter route tree

it's all about the route adjustments I think.

say he's singled up on the outside in man coverage. if the corner is playing outside leverage then Wright runs the slant but if he's playing inside leverage then he runs a deep route. Very basic example and I'd assume there's much more to it but that's the kind of thing I'd think is happening.

But that being said, his main attribute is his quickness, not his deep speed.

oh i agree on his quickness vs. deep speed. but he does show the ability to separate. i was more thinking that if he is running out of the slot quite a bit (or really just whenever he is in the game really), then maybe his option routes are limited as compared to nate or williams or britt.

i honestly have no clue, but it does seem true that he isn't getting a shot to get deep.

I could easily be wrong but I think he's been playing on the outside a good bit too, not just in the slot.

true, i know he did that week one and he's been replacing kenny.... so...

i'd love to call in to local radio and ask munch that. not that he'd say anything other than "the defenses dictate what routes we can run.. yada, yada, yada"

He dropped two slant patterns when lined up out wide against the Texans

He has lined up at each spot in the route tree so far If I am not mistaken.

Seeing Wright live for the first time this Sunday, he reminds me of Mason. I don't consider him a deep threat like Desean Jackson. I expect him to get the ball on various intermediate routes and then make the first defender miss. If Britt ever gets back on the field, he is the deep threat.
