It depends entirely on how much of the guaranteed money is in the form of a signing bonus vs how much is money that may or may not get paid out in 2025. It’s a 2-year, $15.5M deal, plus incentives. So no, I don’t think he’s getting $7M this year unless all the guaranteed money gets paid out this year. It isn't just a philosophical slant necessarily, but about bringing in younger players who can contribute if the window opens. I do think it signals that in this defense the more important position for ILB is a downhill backer. It doesn't mean they don't care about a coverage guy, but it doesn't seem to be the priority for this defense right now, which gives off a lot of signals about what they're going to run as a defense. These same scouts found David Long and Javon Brown. The 49ers scored some great ILBs late. I'm not saying you should rely on that (I would have preferred they land Baker), but they have the insurance of having both Doc Gibby and a rising Reese to hold down the fort if they miss.
