That depends on the size of the signing bonus. I can see him getting a $5M signing bonus plus a guaranteed minimum salary in the first year (plus incentives).

Then if he plays well enough he gets paid in 2025.

I'm not arguing about contract details as they pertain to language. I appreciate your correction that guaranteed money isn't always guaranteed, but as I noted I think that would have been reported in the first place if it was a roster bonus type situation with Dillard.

He's getting paid more than Baker. That much is certain.

It’s not certain at all. It depends entirely on how much of the guaranteed money is in the form of a signing bonus vs how much is money that may or may not get paid out in 2025.

You honestly believe a 2 year 18 million dollar deal wouldn't pay him more than 7.1 million? Sure.

It’s a 2-year, $15.5M deal, plus incentives. So no, I don’t think he’s getting $7M this year unless all the guaranteed money gets paid out this year.

If they cut him in camp then you could possibly be correct lol.

They obviously think a blitzing/downhill LB is harder to find. They signed Murray to more than what Baker got even though he's the better player thus far.

I tend to think the opposite, but I'm not paid millions of dollars to do this either. I question the strategy but look forward to being proven wrong by the results on the field.

I don't disagree. It isn't just a philosophical slant necessarily, but about bringing in younger players who can contribute if the window opens.

I do think it signals that in this defense the more important position for ILB is a downhill backer. It doesn't mean they don't care about a coverage guy, but it doesn't seem to be the priority for this defense right now, which gives off a lot of signals about what they're going to run as a defense.

There's almost no way it's 7 million.  I'd say it's probably close to the 4 million in terms of first year cap number.

They can draft a coverage LB later to compete with Otis Reese for the spot. I figured they would sign a decent coverage guy and then draft the chase and tail or let Reese take that spot, but ILB is not the spot I would want to sink large sums of cap space into anyway.

These same scouts found David Long and Javon Brown. The 49ers scored some great ILBs late. I'm not saying you should rely on that (I would have preferred they land Baker), but they have the insurance of having both Doc Gibby and a rising Reese to hold down the fort if they miss.

Marist Liufau is the guy I've had my eye on.

It could be a $6M signing bonus plus the minimum salary this year fully guaranteed. There’s just no way to tell how much of that guaranteed money is getting paid out this year until the details get published.
