This seems like a transitional move in anticipation to using an artificial turf in the new domed stadium.

The article says they've been using it in their bubble since last off season and are pleased with it.

It could be that they want to test it before moving to the new stadium, but that seems like an expensive test.

The idea that it's purely a cost saving measure when they're moving to an entirely new stadium so soon seems silly. Doesn't seem like it would save money to replace the grass for 3 or so years... That cost would normally be amortized over a much longer life I'd assume to make the upfront cost worth it.

Seems to be driven by trying to control injuries. NFL and Titans cite data showing a big difference in injury rates between this type of turf and grass.

I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't yet another issue where Vrabel and Robinson disagreed for the near term based on Vrabel's comments today.

Other than the initial investment, Strunk can now layoff the whole grounds crew as cost savings...

You really think that replacing the entire field is cheaper than maintaining the status quo for 3 years?

They still have the three grass fields at the complex to maintain for now actually, and this new organic turf product apparently actually requires watering and maintenance to a degree.

What are you smoking?

Specifically, players have a 28% higher rate of non-contact lower extremity injuries when playing on artificial turf. Of those non-contact injuries, players have a 32% higher rate of non-contact knee injuries on turf and a staggering 69% higher rate of non-contact foot/ankle injuries on turf compared to grass."Nov 12, 2022

If it will actually reduce injuries I'm all for it but thinking back it seems like Titans players went down on the road and at practice every bit as much as at home so I doubt this significantly impacts injuries at all one way or another.

Regardless, hopefully that is what really motivated this and they are looking at every possible avenue to address the injury issues.

Injuries: Because of the inconsistent, undependable surface, the Titans have seen a number of injuries take place at Nissan Stadium. During the 2018-2021 seasons, Nissan Stadium consistently had amongst the highest lower body injuries of any stadium across the league.

"NFL Executive Vice President Jeff Miller has said previously that the latest technology, and subsequent data, has been eye-opening as it relates to grass vs turf.

"There has been, over the course of the last few years, a decrease in the difference between injury rates on synthetic surfaces and those on natural grass to the point now where we really talk more about answering the question, 'Can we decrease injuries on both?' as opposed to one or the other," Miller said in a previous interview. "That is a complicated conversation that includes discussions about type of surface, the characteristics of the surface, the sort of cleats players are wearing, the activities they're involved in, probably some atmospheric and weather issues (and more)."

"Injuries have become a massive concern for the Titans over the last two seasons. The team used a record 91 players in 2021 because of injuries and followed that up with 86 in 2022. While a change of playing surface won’t be a cure-all, the Titans believe it can be one element of the alterations they are searching for to reduce injuries."

Mike Vrabel saw such a changeover firsthand when he played for the Patriots in 2006. The franchise was so frustrated with Gillette Stadium's natural grass that it changed to an artificial surface during the season.

The Carolina Panthers are the other NFL franchise that sits in the same weather transition zone as the Titans and they switched to artificial turf in 2021.

exactly, this has nothing to do with coat and I’m sure they believe it will improve health after 2 years of historic injuries.

That quote is based on data from 2012 to 2018. It also says that 2020 and 2021 were a lot better. I'd be curious what 2022 showed.

The 2019 season featured the single-biggest difference between non-contact injuries on turf compared to grass, but the gap closed in each of the next two years. The 2021 season saw virtually no difference between the two.

Regardless, it's entirely possible that, as the PK article says, because Nashville is in a transition zone that the climate just makes maintaining a real turf field too challenging. Even if grass is better overall, it might never be better in particular climates.
