Who thinks they will actually convict? I tend to think that they won't. It will be a death sentence (likely only politically!) to do it for most Senators.

The further we get from jan 6th the less likely a conviction becomes. Its pretty obvious at this point the Republicans are going to cave to the Trump base rather than excise the cancer that has infected the party. In the end it will likely be good for Democrats so while I'm annoyed Trump will get away with it, there is a silver lining.

He's quiet now but Trump will become a constant nuisance as soon as he's cleared.

He could get his Facebook posting privileges back too. The decision is being made by what's essentially Facebook's Supreme Court right now lol

Still surprises me its that low. Its pretty obvious the GOP as we knew it doesn't exist any longer.

I think before long, this reality will be reflected in the Senate as it is reflected in the House, as traditional Republicans continue to retire or get primaried, and  continue to transform into far right populists as politicians like Rubio, Kevin McCarthy, Steve Scalise have done, with Trump as their de facto leader for now.

They're following Trumpism (white nationalist, pre-fascist populism) as people like Romney and McConnell followed Goldwater or like Paul Ryan and others follow Ayn Rand.

Worse, the vast majority of traditional Republican voters are fine with it.

Yes. this is why the dems must act now. Kill the filibuster, give DC statehood (2 more dem senators), and pass a voting rights act. It's the only way to counter the radicalization of the republican party in the short to intermediate term. Otherwise you have to wait for demographic changes. Hopefully I'm wrong and the GOP fractures beyond repair instead but I'm not optimistic. It seems a purge is coming and its not the one we thought we were going to get.
