Thoughts about the running game

So I have seen all thia talk about Henry and Lewis as far as the past and future go. I had a few thoughts as far as this goes and how it impacts our team.

Henry finally got his chance with the majority of carries late last year. A solid group of us werr asking for this for a long time. Not because we expected what happened we just wanted to see what could do as a featured back. This looked amazing and I think we have to go into next year handing him the ball 20-30 times a game and see if he is what he looked like.

Dion lewis is geting to much short sighted flak. Even at his inflated price (which we mighy ne able to negotiate down) he is a great outlet out of the backfield and a perfect change of pace for Henry. It became obvious he is not a every down back which I don't think any of us expected him to be at signing. I believe they thrust him in at starter because laflure wanted more consistent passing weapons to our detriment.

Fluellen looked great on his 2 10yard 3min runs before breaking his soul. But anyone without asthma or a heart condition could have done that and as much as he isnt a liability, another late round running back looks like a possibility. I don't see any free agent though.

I dont know if we will do as I expect with Henry taking the majority of carries with Dion as the spell and long 3rd downs. Who ever ia the 3rd back is most likely relegated to minimal use so they won't make much of a difference. We do imo have a solid group to work with heading forward even if nothing changes.

I know I did not say anything new but I thought a discussion about the running game would atlest start a new topic to fill the time.

im interested in the blocking scheme. seems we wanted to go straight zone last year untilwe were forced to do more man because we didnt have the guys to run a zone scheme. i bet its more a hybrid this season...

the interesting part will be how that hybrid scheme works with the pass game blocking. a lot of what made the previous scheme tick (at least in theory) is that the pass plays and run plays look the same for a sec just after the snap... how does a power scheme work with that? not sure it does and maybe it just has to be one of those times we just say "we are better" and line up and do it (when it comes to man blocking)

interesting point about restructuring lewis. I think we could and SHOULD do it. he wasnt worth crap last season.

we definitely forced him into the lineup because lafleur wanted to go more pass heavy. and it was working fine when mariotas arm was healing up.

also think we could bring in a guy to compete with Fluellen - may have to regardless because of the injury. if we can just get an offensive playmaker that can line up in the slot and run it with decisiveness (amazing how Oman could defend Lewis but bash the way CJ ran), it would go a long ways toward strengthening the group as a whole.

I can think of at least one person on this board who thought that...

He also said it was pretty obvious he was signed to be the lead back.

If you're talking about me I stated numerous times I expected them to have a RBBC with Lewis getting more touches

Lewis still ended up playing more snaps BTW

You also said its was obvious they signed him to be the starter but you say so much I understand you forgetting that tidbit.

I said they'd share carries and wouldn't have a starter, I said it numerous times when I tried to decline the initial bet

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and just assume you don't know what the hell you're talking about

If I cared enough i would go back and find it but I dont, this was before the bet.

After the season started I did post that I thought Lewis would be the featured RB going forward, and he was for a stretch and Henry was all but benched and reportedly offered in trade.

I was really embarrassed on that one

As for the original topic

While Henry was great the last 4 games or so I'd still upgrade the 3rd RB spot just in case he goes back into the tank. I do not completely trust him.

I personally like Fluellen as the third back because of his ST abilities, but I could definitely see them adding a late round RB to compete with him and McNichols.

Well the fact they were going to get him into the rotation before he was injured could solidify your case for him
