Poll: Pardon me? Most say Trump should be impeached if he pardons himself

President Trump has declared that he has the “absolute” right to pardon himself.

Americans disagree.

By more than 3-1, 64 percent to 18 percent, those surveyed in a USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll say the president doesn’t have the power to pardon himself. Even Republicans are inclined to split with Trump on this. Just 29% say he has the power to pardon himself; 45% say he doesn’t.

Trying to do so could spark a constitutional crisis for the White House: 58 percent of Americans, including 31 percent of Republicans, say the House of Representatives should impeach the president if he pardons himself.

“If he has to have a presidential pardon for it, then he shouldn’t be president,” says Valeri Crankshaw, 57, of Hayward, California. She voted for Trump in 2016, but her admiration for him has waned since then. On everything from pardons to foreign policy, she said, “I think he’s trying to send a message to the world that he can and will do whatever he wants to do, and no one can stop him.”

Alan Dershowitz helped out that 18%!

Consistently Trump's immigration strategy has been to punish children in an effort to win concessions.  First with kids who registered under DACA, then with kids traveling with their parents.

I didn't think anybody could actually be this stupid... I stand corrected!!!

Trump has actually said he would compromise his stance on Dreamers if he got compromise for the wall (which ends the argument for the most part).

Building a wall does not mean we quit taking in legit requests for asylum nor does it mean we quit taking in requests for green cards and such.  It simply manages the influx of illegals.

Exactly my previous point.  The Dreamers entered the US as kids and since were  productive members of society.  They had registered under DACA, and Trump started deporting them.  Trump's immigration strategy has consistently been to intentionally target the vulnerable, then offer to stop in exchange for the wall.  This zero tolerance is an escalation of the same principle.

These abusive negotiations make the conversations about authoritarianism rather than actual policy changes.

I do agree though. The war on drugs, or at least Marijuana, is obviously a waste of time and money at this point.

Let's see how far down this rabbit hole you're willing to go. For years I thought the idea of legalizing all drugs was absolutely insane. Now I'm not so sure. The idea that illegality isn't what is currently preventing people from shooting up drugs like heroin is compelling as are the libertarian arguments for consenting adults having the right to do what they will with their bodies. Where do you stand on this? How far are you willing to go?

A border wall is extremely cost ineffective.  Democrats have supported more money for fencing, border guards and electronic surveillance.

The 2013 immigration bill that passed the senate with 68 votes (including all democrats) had 25 billion for border security.  House republicans refused to vote on the bill.  Anyone who has followed the recent legislative history of immigration, DACA, etc. knows the hold up is conservative republicans in the House.
