I Can't be Neutral on the Offensive System Anymore

There is way too much mounting evidence that this offense is a primary problem. I've been in wait and see mode all season and have given the staff the benefit of the doubt at every turn. No more. There is just too little room for error, too many instances of guys known as great route-runners that suddenly can't run routes, and too many plays with too few passing options.  I've known all along that this wasn't the ideal offense for Marcus but I thought it was at least serviceable enough for him to make it work. Clearly this is not the case and things are simply getting worse by the day. Your players should grow within your offense and get more and more comfortable every game. Instead we seem to see the exact opposite happen every single week.

Something has to change because if we can't even take advantage of the weakened AFC South then this bodes terribly for the next few seasons as Jacksonville establishes themselves and a young, healthy Watson leads the Texans. Best case scenario we're looking at a bleak future of close wins and realistically more close losses because due to the degree of difficulty of this offense, it's way too hard to win comfortably and if the opponent is good, win at all. The players do bear some responsibility but it's hard to give them the blame they would normally deserve when in your heart of hearts you recognize they're not being put in the best position to succeed. The system has to go.

I agree. I've also been on the fence about the offense this year. The picture has crystallized to me. This offense is fundamentally flawed, with both a high degree of difficulty and a low margin of error. Playcalling is a problem too, but the bigger issue is the offense itself.

When people say that this offense is not tailored for Mariota, what specifically is meant by that? He's had a few great games, lots of mediocre ones and plenty of bad ones... but isn't it the same offense? Yeah, the opponents change but is that enough to explain away the few shining games? We thumped Jacksonville and Baltimore who are pretty good on defense and then struggle to score against some of the mediocre squads. It's hard to get behind this because we just don't know what to expect...

I can tell you what to expect Charlie, remember the Jags when Mularkey was there? You are seeing the EXACT SAME offensive shit , we all know how that ended. It NEVER changed, they ran "Baby Hercules" when everybody including unborn babies knew he was getting the ball and after a one yard gain, they gave it to him again. So to all the people that say it's Robiski behind the play calling " The Hell You Say".

OK, I can see that continuity, but shouldn't that make the ball in Marcus' hands a surprise element that w/could be an advantage?!? Who was the QB in Jacksonville in that era.... Jeff Blake or somebody?

It isn't really results that are driving my mindset change. I purposely waited a few days before saying it out loud to make sure I wasn't just being reactionary to a bad loss but the picture has really come into focus for me and it's not pretty. The way I'm seeing it, the degree of difficulty is just way too high in this offense. In order for it to succeed, Mariota needs to be perfect on every read and throw or it'll be a pick, sometimes a near pick-6. The receivers must run absolutely perfect routes every single time or they'll get no separation. Morever, even if the receivers do run great routes and get separation, so many of the routes are long-developing that Mariota is forced to hold the ball and then deliver a perfect strike into a tight window, that is if the OL is able to prevent pressure. In essence, this offense is akin to walking a tight-rope on nearly every play of every game.

I believe that the JAX and SEA games are legit wins but also ones where the team walked the tight-rope near flawlessly. Those games where everything clicks and works perfectly do happen but do they happen often enough for you to rely on it? I believe the answer is no and that kind of goes for every team. No team in the league plays near perfect football on a weekly basis and expecting a young team like the Titans to do it is asking for too much. I've come to the conclusion that the JAX and SEA victories are outliers. I don't believe you can cling to the 2 games where the system worked while dismissing the other 11 where it didn't work as well. Those two games are examples of us firing on all cylinders while simultaneously catching them before they fully hit their stride. If we played either of them right now, I don't anyone could make a logical argument for how we beat them. When I look around the league and I see how easily other receivers are getting open; often through no real effort of their own or how easy the throws are for other NFL QBs and then I watch the Titans the only thing I can think is "It really shouldn't be this damn hard to move the ball".Something is wrong. I can't say I definitely know exactly what it is but something is most definitely wrong and it's not just disgruntled Mularkey haters that see it.

Yea go back under your rock till next loss hater

I mean that’s what you told me a couple weeks ago for hating this system

Nah, I called you a hater because you were being a hater. So are a few others on this board. Some of you are too immature to actually criticize a player or a team without resorting to insults and stupidity. You guys just lurk around waiting for a loss so that you can strut around the board feeling validated. It's pathetic and annoying to anyone that actually wants good, football discussion and isn't just out to prove how right they are every second of the day because they're insecure IRL and need constant validation.

I've had my criticisms of the offense, team, and how winning the way we were wasn't sustainable all season and I posted that. Other reasonable posters have had concerns and I didn't call them haters either. You can go look for it if you care to. The difference is I didn't cry like a baby and beg people to agree with me and then act like a little bitch when they didn't. I'm glad my comment stuck with you so much that it still comes to mind weeks later. I must've hurt your feelings which is exactly what I was going for. Little barbs like that one really seems to stick with insecure people.

Please don't compare the juvenile BS you write every day with what I posted. It's not the same. You guys cry and bitch. I'm stating my position and reasonably explaining why I hold it. Big difference.

It doesn’t really play to his strengths. 2 man routes are dead from the jump.

I actually don't. But you clearly see me that way. It's flattering, really.

Clearly you do, cuz this revelation of yours you felt compelled to make a thread about is exactly what people like me been saying for months
