Thoughts on the early building process

Looks like Robinson/Mularkey had a clear plan starting out in FA. Upgrade the STs coverage units and back 7 in pass defense.

When Mularkey was hired it was widely reported he always had a strong ST unit. Early in 2016 the ST coverage units were a disaster and was a big reason for the poor start. With just better coverage units alone the team would have won the division. Focusing on upgrading this unit while everyone else went after the whales seems solid. So often the Titans starting field position was bad and opponents started out in great field position. Over a game/season that matters a lot.

The Titans were pitiful defending the middle of the field. On 3rd and 10+ they gave up 50% conversions over the 2nd half of the season. While everyone talks about CB the real weakness was just defending the middle. LB, safety and slot corner were what needed upgrading the most. You can protect the outside guys more with pass rush and over the top help, you can't hide the inside guys as easily.

Cyperion and Ryan is a start to upgrading. Hightower would obviously be a key addition but I expect him back in NE. Woodyard and Williamson aren't great but they can likely win with better supporting talent. They can still draft an inside coverage LB.

As of right now I'd expect McCourty to at least make training camp and compete for a starting spot. Simms is likely another outside starter and Logan Ryan would likely play outside in base sets and move inside in the nickel. McCourty needs to be upgraded but a good camp might save him. If they draft an outside guy or sign one he's in danger right away of not making camp.

I believe LeBeau had to blitz and play 8 man fronts. With better talent I expect more zone concepts that will protect the coverage more than last season.

TE is now a big need. Supernaw wasn't tendered and Fasano is gone. The Titans two most common formations were 2 and 3 TE sets. I'd expect a veteran signing and a top 3 round draft pick at least. They'd run up there at 18 if Howard fell imo. TE is a bigger need than WR now. WR needs upgrading, TE doesn't even have bodies.

The Titans need a slot receiver pretty bad too. I think McCaffery is a real option at 18. He can play slot, return man and gives them another option behind Henry/Murray. He would really make for some interesting spread formations from base sets too. Either way they'll use an early pick on one imo.

The addition of Cooks or Pryor would help fill a good need and free up the draft more.

I also think you have to consider how much Dodd, Johnson, Byard, Simms and Sharpe are going to improve. They might be bigger keys than most of this year's draft picks.

One thing to consider, the Titans have a huge head start on most teams considering they are set at QB and OT. Looking around the league at the lack of QBs and OTs is frightening. The Rams signed a 34yr old LT, the Seahawks signed Luke Joeckel. For everything the Jags did they're undoing will be QB and OT.

Robinson appears to know what he's doing and the team is likely improving

I think we go secondary pretty early in the draft, attempt to pick up an extra 2nd-4th, and hit the TE position.

Wouldn't be shocked to see us go QB in like round 4. Mariota has sustained significant injury twice in two years and we need to start developing a dependable backup. Not to mention drafting backups are great investments as the Patriots have demonstrated in year's pass. I would think a guy like Josh Dobbs would be a target.

Bennett can block and pass catch so for us he makes a lot of sense because of the offense we run.  I can actually make the case he is more valuable to TN than a WR........but the only thing pushing his value down is the draft class.  Problem is OJ Howard value is between our picks........5 is too high and 18 too low to nab him.

I think many of us have pinpointed TE in round 1 as a real possibility for quite some time. OJ Howard is the best guy, but I don't see him making it to 18. He's perfect for this offense...

Agree.........I think trading from 5 is most likely but I sense with all the QB stuff it wont happen til we're on the clock.........As the draft approaches draft picks become worth gold because teams have a perception of players in their scheme and emotionally bond to them

Agreed. Something of a perfect fit, even if he's a luxury pick.
