Brady Wins

LOL TV contracts. Answer me this, which sport in the world, any sport is not making money on TV deals right now. I saw the other day the World Series of Cricket is on ESPN. We're in a different world. Access has created demand. Every commish is doing well when it comes to revenue and TV.

He's hurt the integrity of the game more than any player has IMO. I don't trust the product he puts on field is fair. I just know the product he puts on field is meant to make money. That's not "protecting the shield" that's "protecting the owners."

Is Roger Goodell doing what he was hired to do?  Yes or no?

What will you be doing on Sunday, September 13th?  Will you be watching football or staying away because you're upset with the job that Goodell has done and the "integrity of the league?"

Honestly, I'm not even sure anymore. I get the angle that he's there to absorb the blows in place of the owners but even a pinata can only take so many shots before it comically bursts open...I really don't think the owners expected for this to go this far and I'm sure they're even less pleased that Brady beat them in court, set a strong new precedent, and generally made them all look like fools. you really have to stretch logic to honestly believe they are happy with him right now.

Protecting the integrity of the game? No.

Will I be watching? Yes.

Is the game itself better? No.

This league would've kept making money no matter who's at the helm. You can thank digital enterprises like Sunday Ticket, fantasy and betting for that.

But has the NFL itself maintained it's integrity? No.

That's his job.

Well if the NFL is lacking integrity then why are you watching?

Point being that the NFL may not have the integrity that you'd like (or I'd like, the league IMO is nowhere near as good as it was in the 90's) but the league isn't losing any significant amount of fans and has gained millions over the years.  Do I attribute that to Goodell?  Of course not, I don't think he has anything to do with it.  However, he was hired to make the owners money and whether it's because of him or not he's made the owners a boatload under his direction.

You seem to equate the integrity of a sport and product on ratings and revenue.

He was not hired "to make the owners money."

There are decisions that should be made that may not be right fiscally in the present, but it protects the integrity of the sport.

He was hired to protect the league, the NFL. Owners are part of the NFL, they are NOT the NFL. Owners die come and go like players.

People will watch anything NFL right now, but is he making the sport better for the future?

Big2033 has been dead on in this thread.

The league is making money on its own without Goodell, he's hurting the league more than helping it. Just because most owners like him doesn't mean anything, there is no money at stake.

scine, hell no I won't make that bet

Here's another funny thing though.

Brady has taken this to the court system.  If you actually take the time to read his petition to the court, you will see his grounds for having Goodell's punishment overturned are all procedural in nature.  Brady isn't arguing he is innocent.  Rather, he is arguing the Commissioner overstepped his authority by suspending him 4 games and used an unfair procedure to do it.

It wont' surprise me to see the Court overturn the suspension because of technicalities in the league's process or due to the punishment being outside the lines of the CBA and prior decisions.  Brady will get to play.  Most fans won't take the time to read the details, the media will distort the truth, and people will believe his suspension was overturned because he was innocent.  Meanwhile, the league still looks good because it tried really hard to police the game and ensure it is fair and people aren't cheating.  Goodell will get another black eye, which he will happily accept as he deposits his $40M paycheck for being the owner's puppet.  In the end, everyone will win.

I also disagree with Abenjami, there is no way this suspension gets overturned, the CBA is completely on Goodell's side

Do you think the sport is in trouble?

I don't like Goodell either but how can you say he's not doing a good job if he's doing exactly what he's being hired to do?

I'll equate it to a game manager QB that wins the Super Bowl (Trent Dilfer).  Did he do a good job?  Well, he did enough to win the Super Bowl so even if you think he's a stiff would a different guy have done better?  It's hard to do better than winning the Super Bowl (even if Dilfer had little to do with it).

Please explain how he's hurting the league.  Will you be watching next Sunday?  Will millions of people around the world be watching?

The friggin Hall of Fame game had better ratings than the final game of the Stanley Cup.  I mean the sport is in better shape now than it ever has been.  Is that because of Goodell?  Of course not.  But he's doing what he's been asked to do.

What did the Ravens do with Dilfer after the Super Bowl?

If he really is the "Trent Dilfer" of Commissioners I'd be looking for better in a heartbeat. Will we find better? Who knows, but the sport (or team to follow your analogy) deserves better.

What did the Ravens do with QB after the Super Bowl?

How does that matter?  The 2000 Ravens won it all.  Isn't that what the goal is?

With Goodell at the helm the NFL has reached an all-time high in popularity and the owners have made a fortune.  The NFL is a business.  What else matters in business besides making money and continued growth?  The fact that teams cheat and many of the players are criminals has not deterred popularity one bit.  And honestly it's not easy trying to discipline some of these thugs or deal with cheaters.  Goodell has to please his bosses and that's what he's done.  And until the public stops paying attention and the league stops making what they're making he will remain in charge.

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Abenjami,

im no lawyer, I just listened to experts who early on said no way. As time went by we learned more and more about what a joke the NFLs case was, and you waffled later on in the thread yourself and said you didn't know.
