Jonboy
Wait... if the Tennessean incorrectly uses the word fired ... then he was fired? Even when it is wrong? No, not really. The first report I recall was from Wyatt on Twitter and cited "relieved of duties," btw. But...is it "wrong?" Where is the source saying we just didn't renew his contract? And if that is indeed true...then how can you blame fans when nearly ever article I can find on the subject says "fired?" 247 also said "fired." http://ten.247sports.com/Article/Titans-fire-linebackers-coach-Frank-Bush-110807
Jonboy
And btw...that Wyatt blog I linked above also said this... "Bush, who formerly was defensive coordinator with the Texans, did a nice job developing young linebackers Akeem Ayers and Zach Brown in 2012. Ayers led the Titans in tackles (101) while posting six sacks and eight quarterback pressures. Brown had 93 tackles and three interceptions, including two he returned for touchdowns in the season finale." The 247 article said this... "The firing of Bush was a bit of a surprise, given that young linebackers like rookie Zach Brown and second-year pro Akeem Ayers who progressed into steady players this season. TitansGuru
It's really splitting hairs and makes for a boring conversation. The outcome is still the same either way. The team had a guy on the staff who was doing well and his players liked. They could have had the same guy back. They chose to move in another direction with someone who is not as proven. It was a bad move by Munchak either way. Original PFT article: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/01/10/titans-part-ways-with-another-assistant/ Read the comments as well. I'll use my favorite sarcasm: http://bit.ly/1gjZAfr The effect is the same, Guru, but the implications are not. Firing a guy mid-contract is a much stronger act. Jonboy
I guess I expect people to read beyond the headlines. http://bit.ly/1gjZAfr No need to get smart about it. Don't forget who you're talking to here. I don't have an agenda. I'm legit curious. There's one article that says "not renewed" among a sea of others that say "fired"...even beneath the headlines. The article stating not renewed also didn't come out until he obtained his new position. At the time of his departure, everyone reported it as fired. Like Guru said though, it's splitting hairs either way.
Cyrus
The contention Jamal was not that he was incapable of being a good coach based on his past experience, but rather that his current performance seems to confirm that his past experience was not satisfactory. It's possible Chet was promoted partially due to his more intense style of coaching and perhaps Munchak thought that may toughen Ayers and Brown up. Unfortunately I don't think either have responded and based on their season I think they both regressed some. It would be different if only Brown or Ayers took a step back. However that's not the case, the entire group took a step back and struggled to be productive. How does that not point back to the positional coach? Jamalisms
It is most certainly not splitting hairs if the point is people don't know what they're talking about and there are multiple articles including some from both Tennessee and St. Louis that note he was not renewed. It is OK to be wrong. Heck, most are concerning Parvalecchio's promotion - which is the entire point. It is not OK to refuse to admit being wrong. Jas
Before getting the Titans LB job, one guy had 19 years coaching experience in the NFL, most of them coaching LBs. The other guy had 2 years of college, 22 years of high school and 2 years as a ST assistant. I can see why some here were calling him a high school coach and questioning his qualifications. Chet Parlavecchio: 2013: Linebackers, Tennessee Titans 2011-12: Assistant Special Teams, Tennessee Titans 2006-09: Head Coach, Elizabeth H.S. (N.J.) 1999-03: Head Coach, Clifton H.S. Frank Bush: 2011-12: Linebackers, Tennessee Titans 2009-10: Defensive Coordinator, Houston Texans 2007-08: Senior Defensive Assistant, Houston Texans 2006: Assistant Head Coach/Linebackers, Arizona Cardinals 2004-05: Linebackers, Arizona Cardinals 2001-03: Specials Teams, Denver Broncos 2000: Secondary/Nickel Package, Denver Broncos 1995-99: Linebackers, Denver Broncos 1993-94: Defensive Quality Control/Linebackers, Houston Oilers 1992: Linebackers, Houston Oilers
Cyrus
I gave Chet the benefit of the doubt. He put his first year of coaching NFL linebackers on the resume and it wasn't good. Should the front office and Munchak continue to let Chet learn on the job? Or do they go find a reputable linebacker coach with a reputation and NFL experience? Everyone starts somewhere and I understand that, but it doesn't mean that the Titans are in a position to allow him more opportunities.

I could argue the contention but note that I am not. The contention isn't the point (as I said, LB play rightfully invites hindsight speculation). The point is that multiple people noted and joked, as a prime example of why the contention is accurate, that they hired a guy straight out of high school. Three or four out of five people don't even know the facts. That is an issue and it is representative of the fan base as a whole. The contention may still be true but people don't have their heads on straight when it comes to the LB coaching change... and Chet's history is a prime example, as is the idea of Bush being "fired" which many would say means he was let go mid-contract. ... and all this reflects back on a discussion of Munchak as a head coach. The discussion was very enjoyable but, as in all discussions, some facts are off and it bears noting.

His High School experience makes up a far more significant part of his resume which is why it was referenced. People were wondering his qualifications to even be an assistant special teams coach when he was first hired. If Munchak doesn't personally know Chet, then there's no possible way the guy is even considered for the job.
