Mike Munchak, however, wasn't among them and his status remains up in the air as the Titans turn the page on 2013. It's a packed house on the episode as Jonboy, Code, Oilerman, and Cyrus tackle everything from Team MVP to who the Titans should retain among their upcoming free agents. Cases are made both for and against Mike Munchak, as well as whether or not the team should draft a QB in 2014. Could we lose Gregg Williams and get stuck with Jerry Gray? One note as I'm listening through: Parvalecchio was the Special Teams assistant coach with the Titans for two years before being promoted to the LB coach. This is an entirely reasonable path into a position coach role. He was not a high school coach who got hired immediately into the LB coach position. This is an entirely reasonable path into a position coach role. He was not a high school coach who got hired immediately into the LB coach position. This is misrepresented enough around here that I'm not surprised multiple of you are confused. Good point. He also coached LBs at Temple back in 1993. Still...at the time the Titans brought him on, he was actually teaching high school I believe. The bigger issue is Munch fired a capable LB coach in Bush, whom the players seemed to like. Again, hardly a scandal. His path to the role is not an issue (despite constant claims to the contrary). A position coach got replaced despite that players liked him. Happens all the time... and both McCarthy and Ayers had failed to progress and all three guys were up and down, overpursuing, undisciplined, etc ... which is a legit reason for someone to make a move if he feels there is someone on staff who can do better. The replacement isn't a scandal either. The results aren't exciting so it reasonably invites scrutiny. Unfortunately, the scrutiny takes issue with the path to the role, which is misdirected anger... and is way overdone to the point that multiple people don't even know what his part to the job was. Ayers was coming along just fine under Bush, as was Brown. The only reason McCarthy failed to progress is because he couldn't stay on the field. Of course he was inconsistent...as was just about the entire side of the ball on a historically bad defense. Despite how terrible they were, statistically, he actually improved over his rookie year. I'm not going to derail the thread into a debate about Ayers. I personally thought he was progressing fine and everyone admitted and knew Brown was having a breakout year. McCarthy couldn't stay on the field so he isn't entirely relevant to the discussion anyway. What no one can dispute is the LBs had a terrible year in 2013. We then have to ask why? Well...what changed? Gregg Williams for one. But also a new LB coach. Maybe they're both to blame? I don't know. But despite whether or not Chet took an appropriate path to becoming LB coach...it was a highly questionable move when they fired Bush and the players backed that sentiment by expressing their displeasure.
