Jamalisms
It's not like he has AP's contract. CJ gets cheaper from here. You can save by moving on from him but let's not overstate how much. AP will count 14.4 in 2014, CJ will count 10 mill. CJ has the 2nd highest cap hit in 2014 for a RB CJ's base drops 2 mill but so does the dead money penalty for cutting him. There is no overstating how much you get for cutting him, it's a very large savings, especially if they spread the last two years of bonus money. 6 mill in cap space. His bigger concern is the Titans are much tighter against the cap next off season. The last two off seasons they could afford to carry him even if they thought his production didn't warrant it. Had they cut him this past March they could save his entire 8 mill base salary in 2014. Mistake Lee7786
Jamalisms
Yeah memory didn't serve perfectly on the comparison. AP's base, not full cap hit, gets up to double CJ... but not until 2016. Until then it's only 30-40% higher. AP's cap hit is "only" 1.5x CJ's cap hit next year. His deal continues to get more expensive from there while CJ's gets cheaper. That still serves the point considering that I don't see the Titans resigning Morgan and Ayers to long term deals worth only $6 of cap space combined so, yes, a $6 cap savings can be overstated. March of 2013 is irrelevant other than that you were wrong.

Neither AP nor CJ will still be under those contract terms If CJ isn't worthy of staying on the roster past this season Webster is the one who was wrong and it will cost the Titans much needed cap space in 2014. And AP's cap hit compared to CJ was overstated by you
Jamalisms
And AP's cap hit compared to CJ was overstated by you It was, though I qualified it as going off memory and it still served to elucidate the point I was making... if one can bother with a detail like whats actually being said instead of "gotcha" posting. I'm ok with that sort of inaccuracy.
OILERMAN
Not to mention AP is the best RB in the league, CJ is nowhere close to the 2nd best RB in the league. AP actually made a case for earning his money after his contract, CJ has been an embarrassment since signing his Omar, and Lee7786

When talking about whether or not CJ will stay on the roster his play will actually matter, unfortunate as that is for him. It's pretty ridiculous to make the case that keeping him on the roster isn't that big a deal because the highest paid RB in the league happens to count more against the cap than he does. While at the same time not mentioning AP had 900 more yards and over twice as many TDs Jamalisms
Denali
Morgan will play end at both sides this year. Morgan says he sees the changes. He's hungry, and tired of losing. Says defense this year will have a lot of opportunities to make plays this year, playing from a lead and being able to open things up. Thinks this team is a lot better than last years. I have high hopes for Morgan this year. Pro Bowl hopes. jreynolds
Denali
No surprises here, really, but Jake is expected to start all four pre-season games and play as much as is "smart." The OL should be the same... using the theory that they all need extra time and repetition. What, no QB competition? Say it isn't so!

While at the same time not mentioning AP had 900 more yards and over twice as many TDs That case wasn't made. It was simply a mathematical point that they aren't resigning a bunch of core, up and coming guys with CJ's cap savings next year... as compared to the highest paid RB who signed a deal at about the same time and often gets lumped in when discussing huge RB deals. This is not a complex matter and shouldn't really be leaving you so confused. Their contracts are structured differently and it's quite relevant (when discussing cap savings in future years) to note that CJ's doesn't escalate in cap hit (actually it goes down) from here out, whereas the other expensive back's contract does escalate. Because of this drop in cost, people often overstate how much will be saved by projecting hyperbole about how many people can be signed. If you think they will be able to resign those guys with $6 million, I'd love to hear why and you may even be right because I haven't bothered with the exact numbers. If that's not what you're addressing, though, you're imagining an argument.
OILERMAN
If you think they will be able to resign those guys with $6 million, I'd love to hear why and you may even be right because I haven't bothered with the exact numbers. Based on a recent yahoo article I posted the Titans right now have a 135 mill cap commitment in 2014, that puts the Titans at #7 in terms of biggest cap numbers in 2014. That's not even counting Warmack yet. The projected cap is 123 million right now. The Titans are currently projected to be 12 mill over the cap for next season without Warmack on the books. It doesn't matter if the Titans can use CJ's 6 mill to sign "those guys". They need cap space to get under the salary cap period. You've already stated the Titans could retain Britt, try fitting the franchise tag for a WR in these numbers. CJ, Dave Stewart and Washington have to be off the books in 2014 in my opinion. There is almost no way around it. If Griffin, KW and McCourty don't play well they could be in danger, a lot can be saved by cutting them and JM is due a 3 mill roster bonus. Another way to save a large chunk is to extend Roos next off season and reduce his 6.6 mill cap hit. The Titans can also advance their current cap savings, around 9 mill to get relief but they would still be over the cap and need space. But the fact CJ's salary goes down to 8 mill next year is irrelevant considering the teams cap spending goes way up next off season. They will have to have space and players are going to get cut. dannynj
Jamalisms
Agreed, but not in conflict with what I was saying. It was not a broad statement about the cap in general, it was specific to prospective CJ savings and what that alone will buy. The Titans have spent a bit in recent years. They may finally be getting close to having to choose to cut people other than obvious overpaid and probably useless vet choices. ... and I do think that if (a somewhat notable if) Britt has a breakout year then he makes for a difficult choice. OILERMAN
They may finally be getting close to having to choose to cut people other than obvious overpaid and probably useless vet choices. If they carry all 9 mill into next season they are still 3 mill over the projected cap before they sign a single free agent, draft pick or do anything with Britt. This is all without Warmack's contract counting on the 2014 cap. They have the 7th highest projected cap in 2014 right now. That is not "getting close", they are there. The scary thing is where is the talent for this? All the young promising talent is dirt cheap like Ayers, Casey, Morgan, Brown and Britt isn't even on the 2014 roster and Locker is paid peanuts by QB standards. Jamalisms
Looking at 2013: We know CJ. Roos and Stewart are the second two biggest cap hits we've got at $7.5 and $7 each. Both could be near the end or could be extended to bring their numers down. Then come McCourty and Griff. Both are likely staying right where they are. Next come Wimbley and Washington. I'm not convinced either are here in 2014 but I'd say Wimbley has a decent shot. Those guys alone are $50+ million this year and Levitre hits hard next year. That's where your big money is. ... with that said, I wish I was familiar enough with most teams to know how high a % most teams have in, say, their top 5 or 6 guys. Is there a mix of positions between teams or a theme? Are the Titans top-heavy or do they maybe have too much money in middling contracts of the $2-$4 mil range... that would be interesting stuff to get a feel on.
