Hill did not do the bare minimum required to avoid this situation. So the initial escalation is most likely warranted.
I don't believe that the cop has any right or is entitled to respect, but he does have the authority that requires compliance. Hill did not have to be nice to the Cop, he isn't required to smile, or even be pleasant in any fashion, but he is required to perform the basics that all of us are expected to in the same situation.
I do believe cops need to be taught to re-evaluate the situation as it progresses. The initial instigation might be ok, but now that he is out of the car is he still a potential threat? If not another attempt to de-escalate should be made. Too often we instead see an unchecked surge of adrenaline that is common in bar fights and face offs, and the officer begins to initiate unprovoked escalation themselves.
If the officer took a step back and changed up his tone again after getting him out of the car this would probably have been a much smaller headline.
I agree with the poster that said it wasn't a great look for anyone involved.
