Cook article

Yeah I know Cook was raw coming out. If he pans out (and I think he has a good chance) he's the exception to the rule, that's all I'm saying.

My comment was countering the notion that you can't expect TEs to produce in their first 2 seasons because it's so much more complex than WR.

Most good TEs manage to produce in their first 2 seasons.

I think this is true to an extent. You have to consider, though, the situation the TE winds up in when you consider both potential and success. Personally, I'm not going to write off Cook by any means because he didn't produce day one--and I don't buy that most "good" TEs produce coming straight out.

Look at Frank Wycheck for example, who didn't break out until his fourth season. It might just be how the player is being used. It is clear Fisher valued Scaife, Stevens, and Crumpler because of what they contributed to the blocking game. And that strategy was not entirely foolhardy.

What if Cook ended up as a New England Patriot? We all saw how well the rook tight ends were for them last season, and it isn't hard to envision Cook having similar success catching passes from Tom Brady.

Many TEs are "late bloomers." And under Fisher, Kenny Britt is actually the exception to the rule in that he was a pass catcher who was productive early on. Guys like Derrick Mason and Drew Bennett weren't exactly stellar in their first few seasons. This is just how things tend to work out for us.

I'd say the jury is still out on Cook, and we shouldn't be totally surprised if he proves his supporters right. We shouldn't be jumping up and down for him either. I know one thing, he should be on all of our lists as a player to watch in the preseason--especially if Locker and Matty Nice rely on the TE as a safety valve.

(on the importance of the preseason games to TE Jared Cook)

I think it’s huge for him just because he became part of the offence in the last four weeks of the season last season. I think he just needs a chance to pick up where he left off. When we drafted him in the second round, we knew he had that kind of potential and now it’s starting to come out. I think Chris Palmer is real excited about him and has been since he first came in the door and watched the film. So we are expecting a big year out of him and he needs to have a good camp like a lot of them these next four weeks.

Yes, that is very telling. As much as I will always respect and admire Fisher, it was apparent that he didn't always let the best players on the field due to loyalty (and trust) to veteran performers. Hopefully, he will end up breaking out under Munch and the bunch.

Bottom line is you find a way to get your playmakers on the field, whether it be by designed plays or more reps. For Cook to ride the pine behind Scaife is mind boggling. It's not like Scaife was Antonio Gates or anything. Keeping a guy sitting on the bench because you're afraid he may make a mistake is playing not to lose. We gave away a 2nd round pick to an AFC contender to draft Cook then buried him on the depth chart. Maddening.

Britt played extensively his rookie season and DWill as well last year. There have been others that played as rookies in the past. The problem for the most part is the guys they brought in simply were not that talented until Britt was drafted. The problem even goes back to Dyson instead of Moss. Can't blame Fisher entirely for the lack of talent (it isn't like these guys left the Titans, got with coaches that could groom them, use them creatively and then have them go on to great careers). Even Calico was coming along pretty good until the knee injuries. Poor drafting and bad luck all contributed.

They tried to keep Britt on the bench more, but he forced his way into our #1 WR. Remember how even in the offseason last year, they still named Gage and Washington the starters. Tons of people on the old message board were wondering if Britt was gonna be a bust because he supposedly didn't know the playbook, was completely out of shape, Heim was frustrated with him, etc. Same old, same old.

Britt just did more in the limited time he played than the total combined effort of Gage, Washington, and every other receiver. If Fish and Heim were still here, I'm sure Gage and Washington would still be named our starting WRs because the coaches wouldn't be ready to "trust" Britt out there.

Scaife was just paid 1 mil in a free agent market and we franchised him the last 2 years like he was a top 5 TE. We Paid Scaife, sat Cook, and wasted money and talent in the process.

Exactly right. Preach it.

Yup.
