Stranger
I don't think Gruden can build a winner at UT. I think he can coach well enough, but I don't see him being the above average recruiter they need to get players to come to Knoxville. There is not enough talent in TN, so whoever takes the job is going to have beat Florida, Alabama, LSU, South Carolina at signing top talent. I feel quite the opposite. In my opinion, if Gruden would have a hard time anywhere, it would be with coaching. If he hires the right coordinators, he can leave the coaching to them. As for recruiting, the guy is naturally charismatic, high profile and has a Super Bowl ring. I'd imagine recruiting will come naturally to him. I would bet money Gruden is calling plays once he returns to Coaching. Also, whichever poster said Gruden loves working with young QB's is high. He hates young players in general. Don't be fooled by his phony praise on MNF.

My assumption is that if he has a weakness between play calling and recruiting, it would be the former, but that doesn't mean he would necessarily be bad at it. As for him being harder on younger players, I bet they would respect him a lot more than Dooley.
tinman
Gruden will have no issue recruiting.. None.. he would help because he could get some blue chippers from florida that some of the others wouldn't be able to get.. he won his SB in Tampa and the areas around tampa are loaded with football talent. Jonboy
Yeah I agree tinman. I think we'd see a massive surge in recruiting actually. The kids with the most talent have a dream of playing in the NFL. Who better to get them there than a man with a SB ring?
Jonboy
Tyler Bray better pray Gruden isn't the next coach because he will never hold up under the pressure. As a UT fan...I'm totally ok with this. I've really soured on Bray this season. Under Gruden, he'd either wilt and we'd get him out of there or he'd become an elite SEC QB. Personally, I'm ready to move on from Bray. I hope he goes Pro.

You've lost your mind...I'd say he'll recruit far and away better than Dooley who, given the circumstances he was under, recruited "relatively" well. Just on name recognition alone, and without barely lifting a finger, Gruden would recruit better than Dooley. Add in his relentless work ethic, charisma, and the fact that he's a celebrity of sorts--with a Super Bowl right--yeah...I think he'll do fine (if he accepts). It will be hard to replace Bray's talent, there's not doubt, but the apathy you saw from Bray on the sidelines on Saturday is the same bullshit I saw from him on the sidelines during the Florida game. The guy is either mentally weak or just not very competitive...it's not that I think he doesn't care, b/c I think he does, but when you see your QB on the sidelines look as lethargic as he tends to sometimes, it only adds to that perception. I think he's got some leadership issues, among others. I also think he's a late round draft pick who will probably flop in the NFL.

Not wishing bad luck on him if he goes to UT. I just think the top college coaches live and breathe college football. Gruden seems more comfortable on TV and an out front type guy. He did not build a winner in Tampa, he inherited one. I think Spurrier has done a remarkable job at SC. He seems to just love being a college coach. Saban is still going to get the best players. Now, if the measure of Gruden is doing better than Dooley and getting the Vols back to regularly going to decent bowls, then he will do great. But I doubt he would win a BCS or even one SEC championship.

There's no comparison to how teams are built in the NFL compared to the 'AA...he could target the players he wants each year, and get them, versus having to choose from what's fallen to you in the NFL. If he's as good of a recruiter as I think he can be, I think he'll eventually have us back in the hunt for SEC championships...and I'm not about to predict any sort of timeline. As for how Gruden's success would be measured, I think any realistic UT fan will tell you, we just want to relevant again and compete against our rivals...that will inevitably lead to competing in the SEC East, which will lead to competing for SEC championships....yada, yada, yada. There is talent on the roster right now; it won't require a rebuild like Dooley inherited, but he will have some work to do--ESPECIALLY in the secondary. Like I said though, everything is predicated on how well he recruits...if he lands a top 5 class in the SEC, he'll have plenty to work with.

Mercalius
I'd look at Clemson for the OC...not their HC. He has WAY too high of a buyout to consider for an (on paper) lateral move. It would cost something like 6.5 million to get him away from Clemson because of a contract he signed last year.
