The Reality: The Titans really struggled offensively against the Chargers. They struggled to move the ball at all and failed to convert for first downs consistently. It took a fortunate turnover by the Chargers to score a TD in a late game situation when coverage may have been soft or the defense relaxed. Against the Lions, the Titans weren't efficient in the redzone and failed to take advantage of opportunities to score touchdowns close and instead settled for field goals. The Titans were able to move the ball effectively in some critical situations to put points on the board even though they were field goals instead of touchdowns (incuding the last drive in OT). However, they were able to score on some long plays.

Perspective A: The Titans aren't putting the ball in the endzone. The offense isn't good enough at this point to be effective in the redzone and drives are constantly stalling. Right now they can only score through long, rare, big plays. Things haven't improved enough on offense and the team can't settle for field goals. Not good enough.

Perspective B: The Titans went from being almost totally inept against the Chargers to being able to almost consistently drive the ball downfield into scoring opportunities (albeit field goals). They scored on a two long touchdowns when receivers made "plays" which was part of the larger theme of the Titans being able to move the ball through the air. They struggled at times on their opponents side of the field, but were able to create productive drives that put were capable of at least putting some points on the board. The next step is getting more opportunities in the redzone and capitalizing on them. Things are getting better on offense and the Titans are throwing the ball much better.

...

Maybe I'm being too optimistic, but I choose to focus on what got better rather than focus on the reality that were not seeing the results that we'd like. Of course, I'd like the Titans to be able to efficiently move the ball downfield and put the ball in the endzone consistently. Those aren't my expectations though with a young starter and no run game right now so I'm going to focus on the reality that the Titans did improve, considerably so in their passing efficiency between the 20s.

So you want to be positive. I know that. I even respect that, however you said that you disagree with what I said on the podcast and I'm trying to figure out what that disagreement is.

How does positive improvement disagree with the point I made on the podcast that we had five fluke play TDs and if we had only gotten one, two, three, even four of those we would have lost the game? What are you disagreeing with apart from the fact that I wasn't focusing on the positive enough?

Legitimate question.

Well my contention is that you were focusing on the Titans' fortune rather than both teams collectively. It seems silly to say "Well if you take away all the lucky plays for the Titans, they lose!" without also figuring "Well the Lions had their fair share of lucky bounces, and they still lost". The Lions scored two touchdowns in like 30 seconds. I can't possibly emphasize enough how lucky they were to achieve those two TDs. They arguably had two turnovers on their last regulation time drive wiped out due to penalty and a possible missed call. They also scored on a hail mary that was far more flukey than anything the Titans did all day.

Yet, the only thing that's being said is: The Titans needed defensive and ST touchdowns to win. Despite the fact that every defensive/ST TDs takes away a possession from the offensive and we have no idea what might have happened on those potential offensive possessions.

So here's a thought experiment: An NFL team only scores through special team touchdowns. For whatever bizarre reason, their offense never takes the field. (let's hypothesize that they score on punt/kick returns, and the defense has been giving up TDs. On kick offs, the returner fumbles several times). However, the NFL team whose special teams and defense scored all their points, wins the game. So the question becomes: did that NFL team only win because they needed their special teams/defense to score?

It's a silly hypothetical, granted, but what I'm trying to point out is that by saying the Titans "needed" those to win assumes that on all those possible possessions that the Titans would have failed to score points. The reality is that we don't know what might have happened and based on the offense's ability to move the ball I don't think it's fair to assume that they would have been failed drives.

Oh and the Lions had three TD scoring plays in the fourth quarter: One TD drive off a fumble in the Titans territory. One after an INT was wiped away by a penalty and an overturned fumble. One on a hail mary. 22 points, goodness gracious. It's like a losing poker player with quad 9s telling the other winning poker player with quad 10s that they were lucky.

By saying on the podcast that we had more than them, I did not ignore their fortune. I compared ours to theirs and arrived at a conclusion that ours resulted in more points.

By listing off all plays (with the exception of those you now want to include because of penalties, at which point I think we've gone far beyond flukey type stuff and you just want to include anything that didn't resemble perfection) I did not ignore their fortune. I compared it and then asked where you might calculate things differently... to which you said I was getting too analytical and should look at the minutia of specific plays and what we did well, which still makes no sense when discussing flukey-type plays.

At this point I can't help but feel you just aren't happy with any negative talk. Unless you've got something more, I think I've reached my threshold for talking in circles on this. In fact, I know I have.

I respect your ability to focus on the positive and be satified. I do not agree that noting the positive and the negative somehow excludes the positive.

I feel like after the Lions went up 27-20 they were in complete control. If not for the KR, the Verner TD and the 71yd amazing catch by Washington the Lions pull ahead and win pretty easily.

The Titans did some good thing and Locker looked really good but it doesn't make me think the Titans are any better than they were after the 0-2 start.

Cyrus is just being overly optimistic. The hail Mary was a result of the Titans not knocking the ball down. The nullified interception was a result of a stupid roughing the passer penalty. The onside kick was the result of Williams misplaying the ball. These were not random lucky plays that offset the Titans getting 5 TDs over 60 yards. They were the direct result of lack of execution. The Titans were extremely lucky to have won that game.

I've meaning to mention how its gone under the radar how lucky the Titans were to get the penalty in OT on the long yardage and either Palmer or Munch were idiots for running there

Wait, so the Titans are lucky that Kendall Wright gets held after beating Bentley on a fade with the safety out of position due to the other route combination? If there is no hold, Locker rolls out left and potentially hits that play for 25+ yards and maybe a touchdown. Wright was home free based on the coaches film at that point but gets mugged instead. If anything that penalty saved the Lions.

Lucky to get the call, yes

So the Titans are lucky because the right call was made? There was zero question that Bentley held Wright. He grabbed his shoulder pads from behind once he got beat. You can even see Wright getting jerked back from the coaches side cam. The Titans could have potentially ended the game right there with a touchdown if there's no holding.

Well of we were unlucky the QB dropped a snap for no reason, we were lucky to get a first touchdown after getting into that hole... especially and auto first down and not something where the QB has to throw a good ball and the WR catch it.
