oldschool
No. When you look at the accumulated amount of guaranteed money that was burned on all the signings and then consider the opportunity cost of where else those resources could have gone it was horseshit and it's part of why Floyd is gone and why we have governed ourselves totally differently since. The givins signing alone made it disastrous and Thornton was hurt more than he played and they should have just drafted a lb that year. Sitting on a pile of money and throwing it at every fa at a position of need is not progressive personnel management and years later we should know this. It's part of why Reese has never worked as a gm again and never will in spite of his begging and politicking. Do you have the contract numbers? Aside from Givens, which was a moronic signing, I remember the rest of those deals being reasonable.
CMJ
Breaking News: When asked how it feels to be a Falcon, Chris Hope said that he will always be a Steeler for life. hahaha...what a SOB he was for saying that. So glad that turd is gone.

h4t
I agree that Reece did OK with free agency, he had to, to make up for his terrible drafting. If you had the measurables, he drafted you. It didn't matter that you couldn't play football.
scine09
I'm not sure why everyone is all over Reese for the Givens signing. Did he overpay for Givens? Possibly. But, as we are continuing to see, the NFL is a passing league and you need weapons as a QB to succeed. At the time Givens was the top WR FA available and was coming off a couple of big years. Was he a product of Tom Brady? Maybe. But you have to take that chance if you want to get to tyhe next level. And, don't forget, at the time the Titans were drafting a new QB and had McNair for what at the time was perceived as his final year as a Titan (although that obviously didn't happen). The fact is is you can't rip a general manager, in any sport, for bringing on a guy who subsequently gets hurt. It happens. Maybe Reese's biggest blunder in bringing in Givens is that he brought on a WR to play for a coach who wasn't going to maximize his potential had he stayed healthy. oldschool
You can absolutely rip a GM for signing a #2 WR to be a #1 and overpaying in the process. It was a bad move.
scine09
And what would people be saying if he stayed healthy, went to Houston and put up big numbers?

Guest
Givins was probably at least half the total of guaranteed money dished out and it was thrown down the tubes and his value was massively overrated because it was a bear market for receivers that year and the NE offence helped him obviously. Thronton was also hurt too much to represent value. And Hope was a terrible nightmare. Harper was the best signing in terms of value but a kick in the nuts to spend money given all the draft investment we put into CB. Ultimately all of them were bandaids. Lipstick on an ugly chick. You do not build a roster with vet FA's and this is just about typical of the kind of return you get. NFL players on a second or third or 4th contract are a terrible bet. scine09
Who cares, that didn't happen That's true but Givens didn't come into TN and do poorly on he field. He got hurt. Big difference. None of us have any clue how a healthy Givens would have done.
