Jamalisms
That thing you just said is interesting to me, would you mind sharing more about it? Wow, quit trying to trick and manipulate me. What a condescending dickhead! --- As always, blame me if it makes you feel better. I can take it, delusional paranoia or otherwise.
Pragidealist
On 3/9/2024 at 11:11 PM, Justafan said: Sure, a conservative that supports gun control, women’s rights, abortion, gay and transgender rights, and will downsize the military and will enforce separation of church and state! IF the GOP were at all reasonable- this would be closer to their positions. Largely, when looking at older left vs right positions and policies- the left got more correct than the right- as proven by results of those policies. (Economic, gun control, and healthcare). In a political world that worked correctly, our political parties would just shift a little. And those that used to be moderate dems would vote GOP with an agreed upon middle ground by both - where policies and progress could be worked out. The new GOP would keep policies from going too far down the far left path (like some form of fiscal responsibility and valuing individual/ state rights in context of greater good; and challenging the problems of large federal power and federal standardization) and the new dems would advocate for things that should be considered but right now can't even get in the conversation (like universal income). They would agree on things like a minimum level of gun control, some form of universal healthcare and a taxation system that did not increase social economic disparities. In a political system that worked correctly- that's how our politics should have shifted. But instead its just become too tribal, guttural and power focused. The intellectual capital of the GOP just went completely bankrupt. They lost on so many intellectual policy issues and ideology that they focused completely on cultural issues, misinformation, and low brow/ low value ways of building voting blocks. Not sure how that's ever really fixed tbh. The slide away from democracy may be inevitable. In the scheme of things 250 years is a very short time. Has our system just started to get worn away? In other words, not allow the extremists to gain control of the party. 100% agree.
Pragidealist
Just now, Justafan said: In other words, not allow the extremists to gain control of the party. 100% agree. That's the problem though. Our political system is being pushed to focus on extremes to get wins. I understand what you're saying. Biden has never been from the "left" side of the democratic party. He's always been in the middle. He has to govern more left because 1) the world changes and is more left than it was and 2) that's where he loses voters. Look now at the Israels stuff. No moderate, reasonable dem is threatening to not vote for Biden bc of his backing of Israel. All of that threat is coming from that more left side of the party. If he ignores that- he can't beat the tribal focused GOP. (That's not saying I'm all pro bomb- just saying - no one with a brain is thinking not voting for Biden is somehow going to make things better).
