The American Standard Gold 17 is two staged.  It is high enough SEER it will get energy company rebates etc. probably but right before the big price jumps, 18+ SEER systems is when prices start going up a lot.   It also is the first higher SEER unit to get the 12 year warranty compressor. The Gold 17 is the only two stage American Heat Pump compressor unit I can find.  Ones below are 1 stage and above are all variable.

Why don't you just get 3 or 4 quotes from different local companies?  I would imagine things cost differently where you live compared to some other places.

 

For example, second trimester abortions are essentially free out here but where you are they really expensive now.

With the 2 stage 17 seer condenser and variable speed air handler it gives you most for your money and comfort level. Does not require the communication systems that are having problems. My neighbor I spoke of had the tech over there again apparently with more issues.

 

Best to stay with the gold 17 matched with the variable speed blower.  Most value for the investment and long term return on investment.

Thanks.  You sure the variable air blow is good and not something else that could go wrong?  Also, sure it does not use the outside communication system and probe?

It doesn't use the communication system, most people prefer a nice digital thermostat,  I would stay away from the  NEST control or any other that connects to internet.  Just get a decent digital thermostat.,programmable or not, a personal choice  .  I prefer  a programmable.

Proposals, waiting for actual, are going to be around $12K for a two stage 17 SEER American Standard or $11K to 10.5K for a single stage.  The person conducting the proposal, who seemed very experienced and knowledgeable, said he personally would get the 16 single stage, and that is what he has at his home.   

My chief concern is reliability.  If the single stage is more reliable, I would rather have it, but if the two stage is as reliable, and certainly if more reliable, I would rather have it.  Would you ask your father how he would rate them on reliability?

Will again just quote him as he just replied quickly to my email.  He sums it up in better way than I could:

 

"In the end, it's a personal choice, reliably is an total unknown.  We humans never can give a life expectation on anything made by people in a factory.   Too many unknowns. 

But a real good rule of thumb, is to play the odds and keep it simple.  Nothing last forever. 

A funny bit of actual history, back in the late 60's or early 70's my company purchased a truck load of factory reconditioned air conditioning condensers.  We installed one in our old office building.  I finally replaced it 32 years later,  FYI it was still operating, I was just concerned it might fail when we would be busy and not have time to replace it.   Over the next few years, the new unit had multiple issues and finally was replaced again. 

 

You just never know what will happen, same as life it's a gamble.

You can call a supply house and ask for a package quote. Tell em you're with XYZ HVAC. The labor and freon costs are high af right now
