And we have now come full circle. The Titans were idiots for not doing their due diligence and instead deciding he wasn't worth the risk based upon information received from other people, some of whom had conflicting agendas.

When there is a potential great QB on the market, your due diligence should be more than what they did when Brees was available. And your decisions regarding risk should be based on as much information as possible.

lol actually we haven't. Miami and NO decided they were willing to take the risk on what they knew of it before checking him out. Checking him out was to make sure. TN wasn't willing to take the risk on a QB that was coming off a major shoulder injury. That isn't about due diligence b/c they weren't going to learn anything that clears up concerns enough. It's that initial willingness to take that risk. MIA and NO were willing to risk on a QB coming off that type of injury.. TN wasn't. Doing their due diligence wasn't going to change things enough for them to be comfortable w/ that risk.

Brees had a rough start to his career, but he turned it on significantly and made the Rivers pick a real problem. He played at an elite level and I considered the move to let Brees walk idiotic at the time -- the injury was the only reason to let him walk. I thought he had to be done for SD to let him go, and I continued to think it was a Pennington deal once he didn't get more looks in FA.

But based on his play pre-injury, yea -- I remember thinking he was elite and that gambling on Rivers was absolutely moronic (and political).

The Chargers offered Brees a contract after the injury and were willing to guarantee him a couple million with additional incentives.

They wanted him out of town and wanted to hand the keys to Rivers. So they low balled him knowing he wouldn't take it and someone else would pay him.

I completely understand what you are saying. And what I am saying is the use of that logic by our front office was moronic.

And I understand your point as well. Let's use some numbers for emphasis.

If on a scale to 0-100 (100 being very interested), you're on 0 at your interest in taking a chance on a QB coming off major shoulder surgery and if having him looked at by your own doctors might change your position +/-10pts and you need to be around 50 to even be somewhat interested then there's absolutely no point in having your doctors look at him b/c it's not going to change your mind enough to matter.

Now you can argue that maybe they should've been more interested and that the injury shouldn't have dissuaded them as much as it did but they were obviously not interested enough that having their own doctors look at him would've changed anything.

Brees was a very good young QB who many thought was about to enter the elite before he got hurt.

Having 0 interest in a guy like that simply because he was coming off major shoulder surgery is moronic.

You can't win the prize if you don't play the game. They should have at least taken a look at him and made the decision for themselves. They didn't and they lost out. It happened a long time ago though so most people let it go.

I can agree w/ that.

That's all i've been trying to say.

If they had brought him in, met with him, talked to Dr. Andrews themselves, and had their own medical staff examine him, it's certainly very possible they still would not have been interested in taking that risk (0 on your scale). Or perhaps they would have been slightly more interested at a 10 and so far under 50 it didn't change anything. But at least they would have done much better due diligence and who knows, maybe we end up with Brees and already have 2 superbowl rings.

That is the most frustrating part about being a fan of this franchise for so long IMO. Some of the decisions (and non decisions) are real head scratchers.

That is probably exactly why they didn't look at him. And that is pretty much what I have been saying on this topic for the past 6 years since it happened.

They were idiots for not checking him out personally and for relying on what other people thought/said.

I'd agree with you if there was any evidence whatsoever that Brees would become elite.

The evidence just didn't exist IMO.

Not surprising coming from the guy who doesn't think Favre should get into the Hall of Fame and who didn't believe Aaron Rodgers could be considered elite until after he hoisted the Lombardi.

There has to be some little bit of interest for them to bring him in. They didn't have it. That's the thing. Bringing him in and talking to him and getting the doctors to check him out wouldn't change their mind enough to make them interested. So it's not really about doing their due diligence, as much as just a general lack of interest or unwillingness to take the risk from the get go.

But yeah, I can agree that they probably should've been more interested to begin w/. I just can't agree that bringing him in would've changed anything.
