TitansGuru
I said the same thing about Carr.
Jamalisms
If they sign Carr he's the #1 or #2 at worst I suspect that's true. Considering we were discussig all possibilities, that's pretty darn consistent with the combination of Verner in slot and new guy #2 or #3.
OILERMAN
I guess I need to listen again but I got the impression that you just said you expected a CB to be added in the middle to late rounds like it wasn't a big need when in fact it appears they might sign a top CB in free agency to replace Finnegan, which would make it one of their biggest needs. OILERMAN
Jamal you said you don't think CB is a need and they are happy with what they got, maybe a mid to late CB in the draft. You said it was an in-fanatic no concerning drafting a CB early. Guru did say pretty much what I did concerning the interest in Carr and the fact he'd be a starter, I believe JonBoy agreed. Cyrus seemed to agree with you that they would go with Verner and JM and move in a rookie behind you. Draft aside if they sign someone like Carr they consider CB one of their biggest needs. We'll see what they do.
Guest
That isn't not true at all. They need Verner to slide inside and take Finny's role which means they still need a decent CB to play outside.
Jamalisms
Regarding what we think they will do to address the CB position: Jamal: "There has been some discussion on the boards - Could we look at a CB in the first round? - and my answer to that is a pretty emphatic no... we could look mid to late rounds... there's also been some discussion on the boards about how we're looking possibly at some guys who may come in and jump into maybe the third CB role if not maybe the top two, maybe pushing Verner down a bit... I don't think it will be a splash... I think they are somewhat comfortable with what they have... I don't think they will look for a difference maker." Guru: "Was there not a story that came out last week, I believe, about Brandon Carr as a possibility to come here?" Jonboy: "Yeah..." Jamal: "I think that is the one (who has been getting discussed)." Guru: "I think that would be a great move ... somebody who could come and compete for a starting job here... I don't think that's a necessity... I'd like to bring in a corner to compete... we're gonna need three corners... who do you guys think will play in the slot once Finnegan is gone?" Jonboy: "Probably Verner, right?" Jamal: "Yeah, I thought that was the assumption - probably Verner." Guru: "So gonna have some other guy there, I don't know how I feel about what we have back there unless we bring in someone more proven. That's why I think Carr makes sense... going into next year I'd feel more comfortable with one more proven guy." Jonboy: "Yeah, I think you're right." Cyrus: "I think they'll go the competition route as well... too many other needs... improve front seven, those are early round picks... probably add someone at max in the 3rd round." I suppose that the terms splash and difference maker got your undies in a bundle, but that's all fairly consistent views expressed by everyone. Nobody talking about a first round pick, but maybe a FA to come in as a starter. If the Titans nab Carr, that's the next best guy to Finny and he will likely be the #2 (maybe #1, who knows). If it's someone else in FA or a mid-round pick, the person brought in could be #3 but, as with Finny, Verner could still play the slot instead of the "#3." Potentially, they land nobody better than what Hawkins (who didn't destroy our pass D when he played), Mouton, and Campbell develop into. That would be inspite of reported interest in Carr, which itself could even be a smoke-screen negotiation tactic with Finny... or not, who knows? We are all guessing. You want to know what they'll actually do, check back with the podcast in a few months... we'll have a draft and FA recap.
Cyrus
They've got Hawkins and Campbell to compete at the cornerback position. Is that a great situation to be in? Not really, but with an additional mid to late draft pick and veteran you can likely come out with a competent nickel starter. Like all things, it's a calculated risk. They have some depth at the position so they can afford to go the competition route. On top of that, you find guys to play the position well later in the draft. All of our current starters are 4th round draft picks or later with the gross majority being 6th round to UDFAs. Do the Titans want a playmaking corner who has great ball skills? It's possible and if they do they're going to need to take one in the first round but if they're merely looking for a starter at the position they can afford to find one through competition. Cyrus
Why? The last two first round corners kind of sucked---Pacman, Woolfolk...... Titans have done much better in recognizing corner talent in later rounds recently....Finnegan, Verner, and McCourty.... I'm not saying every first round corner pans out, however if you look at some of the truly impact guys (I.E. Ball skills, lock-down man coverage types) then they're almost all first round players. Many a prospect though has busted out as teams have pursued those caliber of player though. The thing with cornerback (and what I mentioned on the podcast) is that's a very athletic and reactionary type position. You can easily find starters in the mid to late rounds due to the size/speed requirements for the position (more body types in the sub-6 foot range with 4.5 or lower speed) and the general nature of the position (I.E. Don't need instincts on the level of safety although it helps). I'm all for drafting cornerbacks late in the draft every year. They can generally play special teams and they develop more easily than some other positions. There's probably going to be 3-4+ corners in this draft alone that could probably start for the Titans (in their scheme, in 1-2 years) that you can find in the fourth to UDFA range. If they do that and don't draft a CB #1 then it's because they considered the need to important to rely on the draft. You seem to be saying(correct me) that there is no way they'll draft a CB early, they'll go with what they have, but they might sign someone to be the #1 or #2 CB. It's one or the other it would seem to me. Early you argued that you didn't need 3 CBs and Verner and JM were fine, if they sign a FA then that's obviously not what the Titans believe. That's my point.

That's my point. Not really, no. The draft and FA are completely different types of investments. It would mean that they want a contributor now over waiting for a guy to develop (either already on the roster or as a pick), certainly, but depending on the specific player and the contract I wouldn't necessarily call it a splash. If they are paying someone Nnamdi money, that's a splash. If they get some mediocre starter because he's a veteran and can play immediately, their recent MO, that's not a splash. Somewhere in-between (Carr or worse) is open for interpretation. A first round pick would definitely be a splash, and quite unexpected... to me. I said that a first round pick (not early) would completely surprise me. I expect a mid-round pick. Second round would also surprise me, but that begins to depend on who falls. Earlier I said that JM and Verner are one of the reasons they are considering letting Finny go. Note that 'they' is an overlooked part of that, because my point if you were to go back into the podcast archives is that I am guessing what the team thinks. I've always said that up to a certain $ level they should resign Finny. He's quite valuable to the team and the community. That's my opinion, whereas the rest is what I get the sense that they are thinking based on everything I see. I did not say that they don't need three CBs. I said that having those as your top two is not horrible and you can easily find someone as a third without having an objectively bad unit, albeit downgraded. Having this specific set of three is not needed, just preferred. I continue to feel that way, though they could always sign someone better than that. If so, we'll be better and I'll be happy. Cyrus
Uh yea.... that's why they are talking about signing a veteran starter Well see what happens. I think they'd like to at the right price but I don't see Carr as being that guy. McCormick reported their interest in Routt as more cursory.
