Haven't watched Carr enough, but what's the deal with his low YPA each year?

I've seen one comment on him that said, ''Brett Favre arm with a Alex Smith mentality''. I can't really comment, but whenever I look at stats, his YPA always sticks out to me, especially because he's seen as someone the media hype up as on the verge of being elite.

I know this post was a week ago but this is my problem with Carr, he's a very good QB but his YPA has always been low. While he has a great arm & throws a very good ball down the field, he seems overly reliant on check downs, I think he feels the pass rush too much. Even last year, when he was incredible to start the season, he only wound up with 7 YPA. Marcus was at 7.6, even with completing a lower %.

The book on Marcus coming out was that he was a stronger armed, more athletic Alex Smith. An accurate, risk averse game manager who took what was there & made some  big plays with his legs. He's almost been the complete opposite. Maybe it's the system but he hangs in the pocket waiting for things to develop downfield, he's willing to take hits to make big plays, he'll attempt very difficult throws into tight windows. Even his rookie year when his deep ball was horrible, he still hung in the pocket. He connected on some impressive deep outs & ins. If anything his game reminds me more of Big Ben, he has a much more dynamic arm than I thought.

Not that it's the case at all but his injury proves why maybe he should bail more. People point out constantly that he got hit in the pocket but you just gave a reason how he could have avoided said injuries.

PS - I don't want him running more just giving an opposite point of view

I listened to this podcast recently. Conveniently, they did a breakdown of Carr and then compared him to Mariota, who they did a breakdown of in their previous episode.

It's amazing how many people I've come across who review every QB and every snap for them that aren't that high on Carr. I didn't think that'd be the case at all. Mariota on the other hand seems to get a lot more positive reviews from the same people though.

Well we as fans basically just look at numbers & at most watch their hometown QB 16 times a year. And just watching a game is SO much different then film. We just see a result, but we don't know what went on with the play. Guys who really know football & have the benefit of watching entire plays unfold can really tell how a QB played. For example Cian Fahey showed numerous examples of beautiful downfield throws Marcus made to Tajae in which he just did a terrible job. Most of them were back shoulder type passes where Tajae just simply did not time it correctly or get any sort of height to come down with it. Most of these would be huge plays with Corey Davis.

And Ive noticed an awful lot of guys whose opinions I respect really came away impressed with Mariota's film last year.

I've seen plenty of good noise about Mariota's film as well. The guys I've come across seem particularly impressed with how good Marcus is with his eyes, ability to make quick reads and his processing ability - not just for a young QB, but in general.

The second down attempts need to go up.  They ran way too much on second down.  That was my biggest beef with the offense last year.  The second and long runs, pretty much ensuring that they will be faced with third down.  It's fine once in a while but it felt like every time they had second and long, particularly coming off a first down incompletion, they ran.
