He may just be taking shots at Klinsman though. He also said Bradley was out of place playing forward so much which I also agree with in that I'm not convinced it is right for him. A lot of US soccer establishment is pulling on the reins of excitement. I think they're at least partly right... but also biased. Klinsman is trying to shake things up. There's always pushback. He may just be taking shots at Klinsman though. He's wrong and bitter. He is saying because they played what he saw as a 4231 that it was a defensive scheme. It was a 4141 with the intent to push Cam up and attack. But they were wasteful in possession- and were timid until behind - Just lots going on. Donovan is just very bitter. The problem was no Brsdley pushed up. It was a host of other things- a big one being that he and Jones don't play we'll together -- largely because Jones is a bit (a lot) chaotic for both good and bad. Aside from distance run, I think Bradley out of position affected his ability to contribute more... and I've seen a decent bit of pundit/ex-player chatter to the same effect. Just like Donovan assuming they played a 4231 and that it was a defensive lime up. Or that becomes jones and Beckerman were in that it was a 2 dmid system. Both were false. In no way is he worse further up. It's hard to discuss because there were four different games with different dynamics. The team was worse in possession because he was pushed up and Jones tried to make the killer pass every play and Beckerman was too careful in his pass selection. We generated offense without our top striker and had several sustained attacks that weren't on the counter. They looked a lot different than the other two World Cups I've watched. Pretentious doesn't even begin to cover it. I'll remind you of that next time you disagree with a tv analyst. Donovan is bitter. Lalalas and Twellman are horrible analysts. Jesse Marsch is a former assistant us coach is pretty good. Zonal marking is excellent. Most of the American media is behind on soccer tactics and concepts. I can point you to some really good books by some of the top coaches in Europe if you want. There are a lot better resources for tactical info than the big names. And yes - I'm also smarter than most people and this is a topic I've spent a good portion of my life studying. But believe what you want. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Played Germany with the draw in mind and then we're dominated by Belgium. Possession as a single metric is a poor indicator. Spain likely dominated possession in all of their losses and were out early. The obsession with Possession comes from the success of tiki taka in the last World Cup. For examples Ghana dominating possession is a good sign they are losing. They are a horrible possession team and thrive on the counter. Yet they are a very good team.
