Breaking into the Sheldon Richardson cut-ups this morning. Wow, did he drop some weight to get faster? Being in a real college program has done a lot for his development. I liked him a lot last year but he looks really impressive. You can see some of his issues with leverage and hand use in the Alabama game as he gets locked up at times and knocked off the line of scrimmage. However he plays relentlessly and has an elite first step. I'd say at this point, he's definitely an ascending player and some of his fundamentals are still better than a number other guys, particularly out of his stance. (Not Star Lotulelei who plays with very good fundamentals).

I think he has some length, but he plays short because he's figuring out how to use his hands. Most college defensive tackles struggle with this. He has elite physical tools to work with. Easy Top 15 pick.

Looking back at my notes from last year (May 2012) on Twitter:

Watching the Baylor cut-up of Sheldon Richardson courtesy of @aaronaloysius. Impressive game, very disruptive. Quickness off the LOS to pen. Looks like ideal 1-gapping 3 Tech at next level. Looks a bit linear at times which impacts his ability to finish the play. Would like to see him extend into contact more consistently. Can stress lineman with quicks but like many other DTs, pads rise when blocked. Need to see some more games, but DTs who can get in the backfield are a premium in NFL. Could be 1st to 2nd rd prospect based on Senior yr.

Also random note on Elam from the same day:

Watching some cut-ups of S Matt Elam courtesy of @aaronaloysius. Safety who plays near the LOS like a SLB. Tons of obvious natural talent. Alcohol incidents for Elam are somewhat concerning but mostly minor in nature. Possession charges, not incidents resulting from behavior. If Elam can build on his Sophomore season and play with greater consistency I wouldn't be shocked if he was a first/second round prospect.

Richardson does fit the physically gifted athlete with rocks for brains. Im sure he'll show flashes of brilliance then will never be consistent. This is just a gut feeling.

The difference with Sheldon Richardson is that he's relentless on the field. Usually guys with poor work ethic or character tend to dog it on the field, but Richardson chases down guys 20 yards down the field. Interviews are going to be critical for him, but it's possible that he really enjoys football and will put in enough work to be great. No idea, but his motor is very encouraging. (And has consistently had a good motor for both seasons at Missouri).

They'll have to look into it, but I don't know where the poor work ethic comes from

The guy doesn't play like a guy with poor work ethic that's for sure

Mostly grades I think. Staying eligible is simply part of college athletics. Supposedly Richardson was missing classes and just not showing up for school. It's plausible that he put in all the work for football, but it's impossible to know. NFL Evaluators will find out everything. I honestly think he has the highest upside of any defensive tackle in the draft. I just put him at the top of the DTs on the horizontal board and I think he has the potential to be a future All-Pro if he puts it all together.

The big concern with him is that he doesn't play well with his hands and loses the leverage battle often. So he's not particularly polished in his hand-use which can lead to issues at times. However, he has the pure talent to take over a play at any given moment in both the run game and the pass game.

Also, since we're talking about defensive tackles. I think Sylvester Williams is a really really good prospect too and a first-round talent. Very solid all-around talent who generally plays with good fundamentals and has both power and speed.

Sharrif Floyd from FLA is another DT to consider

I think he's a top 15 pick come April

Floyd is really interesting. He has a lot of power and he's a pretty refined defensive tackle. I put him and Sylvester Williams in the same talent range. I'd have to watch at least 3-4 more games of each to really know. It's a stacked defensive tackle class though.

Mizzou has been putting out some nice talent on Defense lately...

Sean Weatherspoon

Aldon Smith

William Moore

who were all 1st rounders... Ziggy Hood was an absolute bust though... Taking Richardson worries me a bit b/c of Hood...

I rather take Hankins

Richardson was an absolute beast in this game

I'd be happy with him or Hankins

Watching that video I really want Lattimore... Dude is going to be a star in this league when he recovers from that knee injury... Shit I would rather take him over Lacy in the 2nd round...

I do not want Hankins as a run stopping DT, we have Casey for that. If we did take a DT at 10 I would like it to be Richardson. I think it would be ideal to line him up at DE in rushing downs and then we would be able to use the nascar formation on passing downs with Morgan, Klug, Richardson, and Wimbley (If he is kept). I really do not want to go DT in round 1 though since this draft is so deep with DT's anyway.
