The Texans for example drafted Tate even when they had Foster. That gave them two good backs so when Foster went down Tate could step in. Also, if they happen to lose Foster because of his contract demands they can still move on effectively. But they were smart using that draft pick on Tate and not ignoring the position. Bottom line is if you can draft a guy like Tate every other year that might be ideal. But you might have to use anywhere from a 2nd rounder on to do so based on value. You certainly don't pass up a guy like Rice or Jones-Drew for example in the 2nd - 3rd round because you discount the running game so much you get stupid.

The Texans didnät draft Tate as insurance... or even supplementation. They drafted him to be the starter because every other Texan RB (read: Arian Foster) was underwhelming and thought very little of.

That same season (with their newfound devotion to improving the run game) New OC Rick Dennison and his 15 years of coaching the famous Denver Broncos's offense was brought in. Tate was then injured... and Foster had a good season (but still only the 9th highest ypc in this system for backs over 125 carries and arguably the 7th best season of any RB in this system) Tate this year averaged 5.6/carry and the texans would not be wise to re-sign foster for what he will be asking.

Point being, system and Oline are what makes a run game more than anything else. That said, investing high in the RB is wise for the 3/4 of the league who don't have a 5000 yd passer, need that final piece (titans 2008), or just see something special in the guy. Drafting in the late first is fine if you plan your team well. RB's should never bust if a little research was done. Henry and lenwhale were on fisher and I doubt our scouts were too excited about either pick. If a guy had good production and doesn't get hurt, that's about all you need to have OK production at the position.

I heard Mayock say today that he looked at the RBs drafted in the top 10 the last 10 years and only AP wasn't what he considered a bust.

ronnie brown

cedric benson

cadillac

reggie bush

AP

mcfadden

spiller

... yeah, i'd say that's about right.

This makes no sense at all. If it's mainly OL and system then investing in a RB is stupid regardless of having a 5000yd passer.

yes it does, you just didn't get my point.

Most teams need to invest in the run game because they don't have the passer.

You can do it with a good scheme and oline.. but to make it great you need a RB that will get more than is given. Therefore, it is wise to invest an early pick on a guy you see something special in if you are relying heavily on the run game, need that final piece to the puzzle, or see something special in him... especially if he is cheap (like current late first rounders)
