this doesn't help our chances of trading down from pick 5

Why? If they can have someone like Garret at 1-1 who won't be there at 1-5 when Trubisky probably will.... don't be so narrow-minded.

No. If you had a choice of Watt in his prime or Mariota who would you choose?

You don't take chances when it comes to a franchise QB, it has nothing to do with narrow minded. It has to do with common sense. These arent dumbass mocks for these GMs, they know damn well their career is dependent on having a QB

PS - I use Mariota as an example of a franchise QB, you don't trade up just because he's a QB like you seem to think and will counter with. If you think the guy can single handedly turn the franchise around (like in your example of them "overpaying"), you don't take chances.

If you assess that you can get the best DE at 1-1 and maneuver to get a QB to lead you into the future at 1-5, you do it. Going QB at 1-1 would be overpaying by all estimates, but doing it at 1-5 is not so reckless. It's okay to overpay a bit but not too much. They could even skooch back from 1-5 if they could find a trading partner that would allow them to still get their QB.

A moribund franchise like the Browns coming out of this draft with the BEST pass-rusher and the BEST quarterback would be fantastic for those fans and that team. Of course, they have to be convinced that a QB at 1-5, be it Trubisky or Watson, are worth nearly that value and not a 2nd Round value. QB starved teams always reach... unless they are the Colts... and that is just because God was on their side at just the right time.

I think Watson interviews are going to drive teams to do something few expect and I think Clev really likes Trubisky and they know he won't make it to 12.  This is going to make the next 6 weeks very interesting.

To a point I agree with Charlie that we can get a little more than chart value if that situation occurs (not much more but some) simply because the Browns need that pick.  They can't afford to wait until #12.

We "overpaid" per the chart valuations for a RT Conklin last year precisely because we didn't think we could wait to 1-15. Browns may find themselves in the same position for exactly the same reason, but it is the more important QB position. It all depends on their assessment of those QBs. If they like one, this would be a great outcome for the Titans.
