I'm not looking to absolve anyone of blame.  The thing I can't reconcile is that he looked scheme proof last year. He was making these throws.  Same concepts.

Just my .02, but I think it has more to do with what's going on in his head than the actual scheme itself.

I believe two things are going on, he's pressing and afraid of making mistakes and the more he plays the more film defenses have on him and adjust to what he has done well.

A lot of caveats there, but I hear you. I don't really have a problem with run heavy on earlier downs, especially since it was working this game.

I guess I just think it's a deductive leap to assume that these fundamental problems Mariota is having go away when formations change. I'm of the opinion that it's more probable that he's being coached that avoiding turnovers is more important than splash plays.  He looks like he's over processing.

It's also why it makes sense that drives function at the end. There's no fear of turnovers because it doesn't matter. It's full throttle. Playing with aggression.

Or, maybe it's all scheme. Hell if I know.

I never meant to imply it is entirely scheme related. I think coaching is going on as well in terms of they've told MM to bail on plays, probably to protect him, and now he isn't processing the field like he was last year. It's strange, he was standing there getting murdered last year delivering to his third target, and now he's making a short read and running with no pressure?

I guess what I mean by scheme induced goes with coaching as the two are intertwined. When you put a guu in a new offense and tell him to bail, he's going to be uncomfortable when you aren't using the scheme to cater to his positive traits. The lack of play action is bullshit and needs to stop.

Why would they tell him to bail after one read?

I think that's likely a Mariota thing, not a coaching thing

No doubt this is happening too.

I think a big part of it is that teams now have tape on him which is influencing a sophomore slump.

Could be coaching.  Could be just too many things going on in his head.

Low hanging fruit is to just shit all over Mularkey, but I get it. Fans have wanted to turn on him since the offseason. And, it's easy to trash a coach everyone hates than it is to take a critical look at the franchise QB.

Reality, like most things, is there is a gray area here. Blame to go around. Unfortunately, gray doesn't play well on Twitter, and message boards. It has to be black or white. Good or bad. 1 or 0.

I have no idea if the game plan against the Raiders was bad, I don't know really about the play calling, what I do know is Mariota had his worst game of his career and played terribly regardless of the scheme

He's had the three worst games of his career the last three games...what changed?

He had like 103 passer rating vs. Detroit, what are you talking about? People some to forget he had some clunkers last year

He was dreadful until the fourth quarter, and surprise we spread the field.

Besides two quarters of play he has been absolutely awful. What happened in those two quarters? Well, we stopped running the same offense, the defense was gassed, and we spread the damn field and let our QB play football.

Just put this on repeat.
