The issue is there are obvious problems with the voting system and some of the voters. I have always subscribed to the theory that if you have to make a case for a guy to get in, then he doesn't belong. A Hall of Famer should be obvious. Not just in baseball, but all sports. When a guy like Griffey doesn't get votes and a guy like Trevor Hoffman doesn't get in first ballot, its absolutely laughable and makes people like me lose interest. I also think it's ridiculous for Clemens, Bonds and McGwire to be left out by writers when the league itself didn't feel they should be banned from the game. While there is no way one could argue against Griffey in the Hall, obviously a couple people didn't want to put him on a pedestal that lifted him higher than the Cobbs/Ruths/Williams/etc. The line of thinking is if those guys weren't unanimous, then Griffey shouldn't be. On the one hand they are correct, Griffey was not the greatest player that ever lived, and most would argue slightly inferior to those all time greats. On the other hand there is no way to vote no based on merit, and past stupidity by voters shouldn't affect another players vote. Trevor Hoffman was a reliever. There is not a hall of famer that anyone would trade for a top reliever. As such there is very much to the argument that a reliever shouldn't go on first ballot. McGwire would be an afterthought if he hadn't taken PEDs. He should not be in the Hall. Clemens and Bonds had a hall of fame career before taking the PEDs, so their electability is more debatable.
