I'm guessing almost every potential trade offer they turned down over the last year or two has been because the other team wanted Bregman. But he has proven himself to be an essential member of the team just like Correa, Altuve, Springer, and Keuchel.

They also acquired Cameron Maybin today to serve as I guess a pinch runner in the playoffs. It looks like he will be the #2 starter in their rotation once the playoffs begin, even though I think he should be ahead of Keuchel considering how incredible he has looked since the Astros traded for him. Things really turned around since he got here, even the other starters are pitching better. Now they just need the offense to get back on track. Maybin gives them the top 2 base runners in the AL, along with Altuve. Plus he's a good CF giving them even more flexibility with their lineup. Are you this big of a bitch that you haven't been around to own the complete failure and monumental collapse of owning the 1st seed in the AL after saying you had it wrapped up, or did you just get washed away by the flood? No, not completely washed away. But my old apartment here in Kingwood, which looks like a skeleton now since the owners gutted out all the first floor units, was at one point filled with 31 inches of flood water thanks to those dickheads upriver in Conroe who opened their floodgates to save their own asses while sacrificing most of my neighborhood. But at least I'm not one of those rich assholes who lost their million dollar homes, although they will probably end up just fine. As far as the Astros go, they're still only 1.5 games behind the Indians despite their 22-game winning streak. And with Verlander pitching like a Cy Young winner again, I think they will be in good shape once the playoffs begin. After all, even with their offense being so anemic lately, it's still #1 in the majors.

But he's been bad the past two years or so. I did get a chuckle out of the Astros having 2/5 of the 2015 Pirates starting rotation. Now they just traded for Gerrit Cole, who should be much better for them than Liriano was. Goes from being a #1 to the Astros #3 starter. edit: never mind. Apparently it was just a false rumor. Oh well.
Oiler FANatic
Now the Astros have a starting rotation to go with their great batting order: Verlander, Keuchel, Cole, McCullers, and Morton.

More importantly, they kept him from going to the Yankees which would have made their pitching even better than it already is.

I would expect Cole to improve from his 2017 numbers since A)the Pirates are Morons and B) he'll get a ton more run support in Houston. Awful trade for the Pirates. They got no high-upside prospects in the trade.

Its a good pickup considering you didn't give up much. I am much happier getting him rather than Darvish, especially after those two horrendous games he had in the World Series. Darvish is good, but not nearly as good as people seem to think. He had some decent years with the Rangers, but nothing great. For his career Yu is 56-42 with a 3.42 ERA and he had plenty of run support in Texas, and even more with the Dodgers. Cole has pitched in the majors just as long, despite being 4 years younger, with a record of 59-42 and a 3.50 ERA playing for the Pirates.

Career averages Gerritt Cole WAR - 12.2 WHIP - 1.217 H/9 - 8.6 K/9 - 8.4 Cole has only had 1 season where he averaged at least 9 SO/9. It was 9 even. 197 strikeouts per 162 games Yu Darvish WAR - 19.4 WHIP - 1.179 H/9 - 7.3 K-9 - 11 Darvish has only 1 season where he averaged less then 10 SO/9 and it was 9.7. 265 strikeouts per 162 games Darvish has started at least 29 games 4 times. Cole has only done it twice. Then you factor in that Cole is NL and Darvish mostly AL. Less runs given up, less hits given up, and a shit ton more stirkeouts while playing in the league that features the DH. Please. Numbers across the board are superior. You are silly. While I agree with you that Darvish is a better pitcher, you have to factor in salary. Darvish will probably get DOUBLE of what Cole would cost (in salary). Is Darvish that much better than Cole? The Astros obviously didn't think so.

He's going to get more than double what Cole makes, which would be $13.5M, while Darvish should get around $15-20M/year, so he could get close to three times as much. If you also factor age into the equation then that really favors Cole at the age of 27 versus Darvish at the age of 31.
