Post your pc gaming rig and gaming experiences

I'm likely about to get back into pc gaming, and I thought this would be an interesting topic. Lots of awesome looking games coming out (Elder Scrolls OL, Titanfall, Witcher 3, etc), and I'll need to start from scratch with a rig that'll handle those. I also need to catch up some games like Bioshock Infinite, Crysis 3, CS Go, Planetside 2, and Battlefield 4.

I hope to have as much fun as I did back when playing Doom, Duke Nukem, Marrowind, Populous, Unreal, etc. Oh, and how could I forget the Commodore 64 ;)

Any parts n pieces suggestions are welcome, as well as any pc gaming talk in general.

I have a PC I built in 2012:  3770K CPU, GTX680 video card.  CPU have not improved much since then.  The GTX 780 is about 15-20% stronger than 680 GTX.  Best to wait on the new Nvidia card this Spring/Summer probably.  The GTX770 of 780 is what you would want if you do not wait.

Biggest upgrade:  get a solid state drive.  My Samsung 830 has been very good.  I could not imagine a computer without a SSD now.

I could wait, but getting a bit anxious. I was looking at an I5 4670k cpu. A 770 was the most I'd figure I'd spend on a gpu. Has Nvidia announced anything about the new car you mentioned? Have you had to add any extra cooling?

How much was your ssd? I'm most in the dark about that, basically have just read it is a nice option for faster load and boot times. Also saw some pretty high prices.

On heat: Just good heat sink and fan, but never overclocked as CPU is not bottleneck so never needed to overclock it.

I think the upcoming Nvidia is supposed to be a die cast change or something and should see a a good boost.  I want one because I might go to 2560X1440 screen. For 1920X1080, the GTX 680 is fine on ultra setting on most games.  The GTX 770 or 780 would be more than enough for current games on 1920X1080.

My SSD was on sale for under $200 and it is 256 gigabytes.  They are now probably half that (around $100.)

I'd love to get into PC gaming. I remember having a blast playing some of the old Civilization and Age of Empire games when my PC could run them without me needing to do anything.

I wouldn't even begin to know how to build a gaming PC. That's why I'm partially interested in those Steam Machines, but even then, how long will the $500 machine be able to play the most up to date games on the market. How much will it cost to upgrade the parts needed to keep up to date, etc, etc.....

I'm not terribly worried about having the best graphics possible, but I realize that as soon as you buy a PC part, it's almost instantly out dated equipment.

I'm thinking of upgrading from my Atari 2600 any day now...

Fond memories of my 2600.  But do recall thinking the Intellivison was pretty cool too.  A bud had one.  Another had the Commodore.

Can't say much good about the Coleco Adam except that after it came out I told my Dad to not buy stock in Coleco and stick with Mattel instead.  Didn't that one come with the actual typewriter-style printer?

Crysis 3 turned up to mostly high/ultra was smooth, not sure of FPS but I noticed no stutter or lag.

Nice. I really want to see Crysis 3 in action. I have noticed a considerable difference between games running 30 and 60 fps on consoles, I think I'll aim for 60. I've heard of guys sacrificing graphics for fps. Of course it's all relative to the dollar spent, but I've always been a sucker for doing things cheaply.

I used to rep counter strike 1.6 back in the day. Need to build a new PC though.

My hand eye coordination may be worse now that I am older, but I really want to play some quick twitch shooters again.
