Guest
Tell me again why are we supplying the rebels with weapons? This should be unacceptable whether you are a democrat or republican.

ALTitan
Putin's op-ed http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/12/opinion/putin-plea-for-caution-from-russia-on-syria.html?hp&_r=1& I've started a new topic on this article before I saw your post. I think it is a very impressive op-ed and I don't really like Putin that much.
ctm
It doesn't, but that doesn't take into account preventing future uses of chemical weapons. That's the point. Assad has alread said that he will retaliate if we bomb him. I think it is more likely that he gives/sells chemical weapons to a terrorist group if we bomb him. Starkiller
That's what everyone thought last time but the markets pretty much ignored it There was huge market turmoil over the debt ceiling last time. As for a potential government shutdown at the end of the month, it depends on how close they get to it and how much the GOP continues saber rattling over defunding Obamacare. Hezbollah is his ally, but they aren't going to attack us (though they could Israel).

ctm
Al Qaeda is against him. He is going to sell them chemical weapons? Hezbollah is his ally, but they aren't going to attack us (though they could Israel). OK, so we are arming the rebels, Al Qaeda, right? And maybe I shouldn't have said he gives them to a terrorist group. What if he just arms a group loyal to him and over time they smuggle them into the US and use them. I think my basic point is still true. Attack him and he is more likely to attack us, in some form.

Starkiller
OK, so we are arming the rebels, Al Qaeda, right? We are arming some of the rebels. Not the Al Qaeda factions however. The rebels are pretty diverse. Plus, for what it's worth, if the rebels win it would benefit us to have strengthened the factions that don't hate us. I'm not in support of arming the rebels, mind you, just rationalizing the benefits. And maybe I shouldn't have said he gives them to a terrorist group. What if he just arms a group loyal to him and over time they smuggle them into the US and use them. I think my basic point is still true. Attack him and he is more likely to attack us, in some form. I find it unlikely.
Guest
Any US involvement increases the likelihood that we are a target.
Starkiller
I really don't think so, personally. That assumes that we aren't already a target.
reo
There's really not a good situation here. Extremists like we see in Syria are created in large part through suppression. People run out of options and get more and more extreme as they get more desperate so what happens if the Syrian government wins? More extremists and the people hate the US b/c we didn't help them. Right now the people are losing and the extremists are coming into to fight the regime but the moderates are getting pushed out. So what happens if the regime loses and we don't help? The extremists come to power or have a good shot of it. They're apparently taking the gamble that they can try and help the "good" rebels defeat the regime and in doing so increase the likelihood of them gaining power when it's all said and done. WIll it work? No clue. That's why it's a gamble.
ctm
A lot of bad things happen in the world. We can't fix all of them, nor should we try. This is an internal civil war and there is no immediate threat to the US. US bombing is illegal by international standards. Killing innocent people with air strikes causes the US to lose the moral high ground, worsens our international image, and increases the chances that there will some form of retaliation. The consequences of even limited air strikes are unknown. It's very possible that US involvement inflames the situation and draws in other parties.
