TitansGuru
I know. But reality is the site isn't free and those posting the most are the ones eating up the most bandwidth. I would guess if you added up the bandwidth use of the top 24, it would exceed everyone else combined. My thinking is you dedicate enough of your time to making this place happen that there's no way you should be footing any of the bill. And when the bill averages less than $1 a month for per top 24 poster, I have to think all 24 of us would be happy to chip in once every two years. And seriously, considering the amount of time you put into this, anyone who isn't willing to throw down less than a buck a month is cheaper than Bud Adams and should be banned. But those are just my thoughts. Obviously, the decision is yours and it sounds like you made it. Therefore, I hereby propose all 24 of us voluntarily accept my proposal. And I appreciate it. I enjoy the work that it takes most of the time and the posters I've met because of it. Honestly, if we grow a little more the site could support itself. TitansGuru
Btw, this is another option that seems to be a step up from the VPS and is the same price: http://www.mddhosting.com/semidedicated.php

OzTitan
Btw, this is another option that seems to be a step up from the VPS and is the same price: http://www.mddhostin...midedicated.php Following on from my post in that other thread, my guess is that this is a VPS too just without the root access - basically every shared hosting strategy out there today would use virtualization I suppose. And whilst two CPU cores seems great, I'd argue it is overkill and on some virtual platforms (VMWare I know for a fact), the more CPU cores you throw at a virtual server, often the worst off it will be if the server is latency sensitive (like a web server), because the virtual platform won't serve CPU requests for the virtual server until the amount of cores it wants are free. So if you have a VPS with 4 cores assigned to it, it may not process anything from it until there are 4 free cores to take - not even if there are 3 ready, it still needs that last one. It will probably be fine, and 99.99% of the time not a concern - just being nerdy
TitansGuru
Their VPS hosting actually offers root access. With the SDS it's a very limited number of sites on the server. Fewer than VPS accounts even. A dedicated server would be the best and would be overkill. Also, I've done several tests with these guys. I did the obvious stuff with ping testing and all of the other toold pingdom offers including real up time reports. I have visited IPB forums on their servers. Their slowest server that I pinged was 762ms. Meanwhile, this site and others on the server clocked in around 3.7-3.83 seconds. Their worst server's downtime was 99.84 and that was significantly better than ours. We also have suffered from resource throttling with our current host which would be avoidable by having more resources available. Shared hosting costs about $7 a month now. VPS would be anywhere from $20-$50 and up. This is $25. I checked out an IPB forum as well as a myBB forum and both were much snappier than ours. This was something I was going to do in the background around May or June but started this thread to address the two outages the previous two days. TitansGuru
Semi-Dedicated Our SDX plan is basically one shared hosting account on a powerful server. What’s different compared to our standard shared hosting plan is that there far fewer accounts on our SDX servers. So you have more resources available to you. For example, if you have a fairly busy forum not suitable for regular shared hosting, you would want to purchase our Semi-Dedicated hosting plan. SDX is not intended to be used to resell hosting since it is still a basic shared account. It’s intended for those who still want a shared hosting environment that packs a bit more punch. Our SDX plans are also good for a video share website. VPS A VPS (Virtual Private Server) is sort of like having a dedicated server in terms of customization abilities but without the extra cost (because it’s still a shared hosting environment). Our VPS plan offers full root or administrator access and you have full control over the settings and software on the server. Think of a VPS plan as having a partition on a large server. Disk Space Unlimited Bandwidth / Data Transfer Unlimited Users per server Approx 15 (varies due to load balancing) Over 600% more resources than shared hosting Included FREE Daily backups Fully Managed Service FREE Unlimited MySQL, Email, FTP Unlimited Parked Domains / Subdomains FREE secure SSL access FREE RvSitebuilder FREE Softaculous script installer cPanel Pro FREE Setup Semi-Dedicated (SDX) (monthly term) $19.95 /mo. TitansGuru
That's from JaguarPC. I may be leaning towards them now. Should be more than adequate and is a little cheaper. I like the idea of not having to license and manage everything like a VPS.
Cyrus
It's all Greek to me. Seems like the site has been growing lately and I wouldn't be surprised if the site saw some increased users during the free agency period and draft. I say go for whatever is the best plan moving forward. I'm sure people will step up to fill the need.
OzTitan
I like how they specifically mention busy forums for the SDX plan - at least if things don't go as well as hoped you can point to that and ask what's up.
