You don't suffer broken bones, jammed fingers, pulled muscles, cramps, tears, concussions, and exhaustion as a regular work day. These guys are under extreme stressors both mentally and physically. Alcohol is probably the WORST outlet for that stress & pain. Pills? Not as side effect free as marijuana. What does any of that have to do with using painkillers recreationally? It is pretty much the definition of using it to help pain. Weed can also be used to to help with pain too, which I have acknowledged plenty... still doesn't mean that it is more likely someone in the NFL will probably use weed recreationally (AND for pain if they have a legit reason) compared to taking pills for recreational use, even though it helps their chronic pain primarily. Clarification - I have never said keep pot illegal, I just said that pain is the easiest excuse to make it legal. I don't get why you have such an issue with me saying people use pot more recreationally than they do painkillers
pat
Had a college friend who claimed to be smoking for pain relief, though it turns out she was abusing pills as well.

I don't get why you have such an issue with me saying people use pot more recreationally than they do painkillers I have quite a few friends that I've lost to recreational pain killers. It usually starts with a wisdom tooth extraction, pulled back, etc. They get a refill because symptoms persist. When that runs out, they find a dealer. Then they graduate to opiates & hospice style drugs. I've seen them lose: jobs, houses, kids, and their own lives. I'm not talking about your avg jackass either. Stable people with good jobs. Recreational pain killer, uppers, & opiates usage is currently an EPIDEMIC. Pot will never be an epidemic because it doesn't destroy. Anything you take to alter consciousness or pain receptors is to alleviate pain, whether mental or physical. The healthiest form of stress relief besides sex is exercise. Athletes really don't have that option bc they exercise for a job. Their main relief needed is mental. Escaping mentally reduces stress, alleviates tension, and in theory will thus lead to less injury.

I guess we are just on a different level on our term "recreation"... I consider that addiction. If a real alcoholic was always drunk I wouldn't consider him drinking recreational, even if it was a fun night with friends. I think people choose to smoke for fun at a higher rate than other drugs.
